It is not probable that. State Treas
urer Park is losing any sleep over
the candidacy of lion. W. J. Speer,
who is on Ins trail. Mr. Speer is a
good man and has many admirers
over the state but the truth is be
will still be trailing at the end of the
race. Mr. Park lias made a most
trustworthy official and lie may ex
pect a re-eleotion at the hands of the
people this year.
It is not at all improbable that the
jealousies of the English people have
been ^aroused over the attention
Prince lleury has been receiving at
the hands of Americans. As a mat
ter of fact these attentions are no
more than is characteristic of our
people and like personage of any
other country would receive the
courtesies which have recently been
extended 10 the Prince.
There is a strong sentiment in De
catur county in favor of early pri
maries. It is not only acceptable
the candidates, but it is condu
cive to the best interests of every
one to have the primary early. The
cess of construction at Paterson, and
by spring it will be shipped to Michi
gan on a train of thirty cars, to take
its place iu the calumet and Hecla
Company’s works, says the New
York Post. The mills where the
copper ore is ground are so large,
and the debris accumulates so rapidly
that it takes a small army of carts to
carry it away, at an great , expense
It was therefore decided to build a
sand wheel to do the work. The ap
paratus will set up *iu the stamp
mill in such a position that the
buckets fastened to the wheel will
scoop up the waste as they, levolVe,
and automatically dump their con
tents into an elevated trough or
sluice extending from above the
wheel, where the water will wash
the waist away to along distance.
It is really ah enormous cog wheel,
and is revolved by a smaller cog,
which fits into the rim of the big
wheel, on the rim of which there are
520 teeth. As the teeth on cog
wheel must fit exactly, the tooth-cut
ting will require two or thee months.
In appearance the wheel, excepting
or the teeth, resembles a huge bicy
cle wheel. The spokes are shaped
like those of abicyle, but consists of
a bicyolc, but consist of steel rods
two inches in diameter and thirty
two feet long. The hubs are like
those of a bicycle, and the axle is
twenty—seven leut long, thirty—two
in diameter, and weighs 43,000
pounds. It was cast at the krnpp
works, in Germany. The wheel it
sett is sixty-five feet in diameter,
and swinging upon the inner suffacu
of the rim will bs the buckets, four
and one-half feet long and three
feet wide, fomed like a dredging
scoop. There will be 550 buckets
on the wheel, and it is calculated
that each revolution will carry away
as much as ten revolutions per min
ute, and will require 700 horse-power
to drive it. The motive power will
be electricity.
