A QOOD BANK STATEMENT.
We are in receipt of the state
ment of the Quincy State Bank,
which makes the finest showing of
any bank in this section. They
have a deposit account of £335,000
and have, loans and discounts to
the amount of £338,000. They
have a capital stock of £60,000
and their surplus and undivided
profits amount to £49,000.
The policy of this bank has been
especially liberal towards the far
mer. A large part of its patron*
age is received from the lower part
of Decatur county, which is about
equally distant from Bainbridge
and Quincy. It is said that any
farmer that has a crop prospect
can go to the Quincy bank and
borrow money at reasonable rates
payable when his crop is harvested
and sold. This is a great conven-
ience and saving to the farmer,
enabling him to make his crop and
pay cash tor his labor and sup*
plies.
The farmer is a valuable and a
safe customer for a bank and his
patronage is very desirable. Qur
Bainbridge banks have a flattering
list of them on th^ir books, but
our Quincy neighbors seems fo be
* gradually encroaching upon and
absorbing our rightful territory.
There has been much talk about
establishing in Bainbridge a gen
tral supply store with home capi*
tal. It would seem 'hat the field
is open and the time ripe for such
an enterprise. A banking attach*
ment would greatly aid and add to
its prosper 1 ty. We would suggest
the formation of a stock company
for this purpose. There are many
farmers in the county with surplus
money who are in position to know
that there are big pronts in the
farmer’s supply business and are
therefore willing to invest their
money in it. The crop prospects
ape better this year than they have
been in many years and there will
never be a better opportunity to
foster the enterprise if the farmers
would control.
ASSOCIATE JUSTICE TURNER.
Judge Henry G. Turner, of
Quitman, has been appointed to
and accepted the vacancy on the
bench of the Supreme Court made
by the death of Judge Samuel
Lumpkin.
Judge Turner took up the duties
of his position last week and now
adorns the court of last resort pf
the state. The Supreme Court is
greatly strengthened by the addi
tion of Judge Turner. His expe*
rience in national life, in contact
with men ond affairs, as congress
man from Georgia, endows him
with a broad and comprehensive
judgment. He is learned in the
law and possessed of a discerning
and discriminating legal mind to
bring to hear on the intricate ques
tions before the court. His de
cisions are bound to be models of
learning, wisdom and justice.
GEORGIA AT ST. LOUIS EXPOSITION.
Professional.
“Private” John Allen, ex con
gressman from Mississippi, ad
dressed the members of the gen*
eral assembly of Georgia the other
night on the importance of Geor
gia being represented at the ap
proaching St. Louis exposition.
He advanced sone very strong
reasons why Georgia should make
a display of her resources there.
Georgia has the reputation of
being t>ie rfiost advanced and pro
gressive of the southern states.
All the rest of the southern states
will be represented by an exhi
bition at this exposition. Georgia
has nothing to fear by comparison
since she can far surpass any- of
them in point of excellence.
Millions of people will visit the
exposition, and among them there
will be home seekers and invest
ors. They will go there to get oc-
cular demonstration of the advan
tages to be offe ed by the various
sections of the country. Georgia’s
exhibit of her material resources
will advertise her to these people
as nothing else will, and will with
out a doubt influence capital and
emigrants of a desirable kind.
Therefore will it not be a pretty
safe and sound advertising policy
for the legislature to appropriate
£50,000 for the purpose of mak
ing a creditable exhibit ? It will
be the means of increasing the
slate’s revenue in a few years
many times £50,000, and if so no
one can deny but that It will be a
judicious expenditure.
It strikes us that it is greatly to
the advantage of South Georgia
to have the exhibit, for if there is
an influx of capital and emigration
it will naturally be turned in this
direction, being the choicest part
of tfie state for both residents and
investors

The Baptists of the Stone
Mountain Association are much
agitated over the question of alien
immersion. At their approaching
meeting Dr. Broughton’s Atlanta
church, which is a member of the
association, will be. dealt with for
holding alien immersion views and
it seems very probable will be ex*
pelled by the association. Dr.
Broughton will be present and re*
sist any action against his church.
A vefy heated discussion of the
question is expected as there are
able and prominent ministers
lined up on both sides of the ques
tion. Dr. W. W. Landrum of the
the First Baptist has been quoted
as favoring it. Alien immersion
we understand means accepting as
a member of the Baptist church a
candidate who nas been previously
immersed by a minister of another
faith and order without re*immer
s^pn.
In the United States court of
Alabama the other day before
Judge Jones, an Alabama citizen
was found guilty of the charge of
peonage—homing another in in
voluntary servitude—and was fined
£1,000. Several convictions on
this charge have been recently re
turned and Judge Jones has stated
his determinination to break up
the practice. The secret service
department of the United States
has been assisting in the prosecu
tion.
John Flannery, the well known
Savannah merchant, has drawn his
check for £50,000 and presented
it^o the trustee , who are charged
with using the income from it for
the aid of several Catholic benevo
lent and educational institutions
in Savannah.
