Thi surveyors of the Apalachi
cola Northern aailway have sur
veyed seven and one-half miles of
the proposed road from Apalachi
cola, across the Apalachicola river
and extending beyond the marshes
on the north side of the river.
Eight and one halt miles southeast
from River Junction have also
been surveyed, and the remaining
surveys will be pushed forward as
rapidly as possible. The maps and
jrofiles are now in the hands of
Vice-President. Beverly. A satis
factory point tor the location of
the bridge that is to span the Ap
alachicola river, has been secured
commencing at a point 150 feet
south of the south end of Coombs
& Co.’s boom at Old Woman’s
Bluff. Mr. Beverly says that the
marshes near the river have been
.gone over very carefully, and that
he finds them in much better con
dition than he expected; estimates
of costs of bridges and approaches
thereto, have been made and the
estimates have been passed upon
by the directors, wiio are well
pleased with the outcome.
Property owners on the line of
survey have acted very liberaly,
granting ftee rights-of-way to the
company. A letter from President
Duffey, who ,js in New York,
states that everything is bright
for the early completion of the
road. It is probable th ,t within
the next few i^eeks the work of
cutting a righttot-way and exca
vating will commence. Altogether
prospects look very flattering in
deed.

The Syrup Law.
the country between Chattahoo
chee, Fla. and Apalachicola, and
it is understood that it will extend
northward to Bainbridge as soon
as it can be done. Bainbridge it
seems is the logical point to be
reached, as the road could reach
several competing and connecting
lines at this point.
It will be fortunate for Apalach
icola when this road is completed
to that point; as it is probable that
the demand will then be made for
deep water at Apalachicola, and
The syrup law which provides
that all adulterated syrups shall
be plainly labled with the ingredi
ents contained thereon and the
name of the manufacturer will be*
cbme effective September 1.
This law was advanced by the
South Georgia cane growers, who
argifed that syrups were being
sold in the state for ‘‘Georgia
cane,” “ribbon cane” and “pure
cane,” which were adulterated,
and it was for protecting those
syrups that the measure was intro
duced by representative Brinson,
of Decatur county.
The law provides a heavy pens
alty—confiscation of the goods
and a hne of from $200 to 1,000
for the party selling syrup adul
terated and not so labled. A re
ward of $ 50 is offered to the in
formant.
The local wholesale merchants
have taken the precaution to noti
fy their customers that the law
will be effective on the first ot
next month, and inclosed copies
of the law. The merchants claim
that the law is a good one and
no loss will accrue to them from
its enactment, as all syrups are
now pure, it being cheaper to sell
the pure syrup than to adulterate
with glucose. All syrups will be
labled after September 1.
Syrup refiners will do well to
in South Georgia to paste this in
their hats and memories.—Thom
asville Times-Enterpnse.

To Amend Constitution.
An important constitutional
amendment will be voted on at
the next election, touching the
question of local taxation for
school purposes.
. The constitution at present re
quires the recommendation of two
successive grand juries, and then
a two-thirds majority of the le
gally qualified voters before a
county can secure local taxation
ior schools. The McMichael
amendment removes the jury rec
ommendations and leaves the ques
tion to a vote of the people, a two-
thirds majority being required be
fore th.c law can be put in opera
tion. It also permits school and
militia districts to vote on the
question.
