Concerning Good Roads.
The Washington Post discuss
ing the recent sentiment in Geor
gia in favor of good public roads
has this to say:
Now that Georgia has come for
ward in the character of a pioneer,
let us hope that the rest of the
southern states will make haste to
follow an example of such wisdom
and beneficence. All of them are
in sad need of the benefits result"
ing from good roads throughout
their borders. Good roads will en
hance the value of their property,
and add largely to the proceeds of
their industry. Georgia is to be
congratulated, not only on account
of the proclivity she is destined to
achieve, but also because of the
useful and wholesome example she
now sets for others.
The importance of this great
question can not be too often or
too emphatically expressed, The
people in all parts of Georgia are
awakening to the importance of
good roads and many of our coun
ties have already built a system of
macadamized or hard surfaced
roads radiating all sections of the
county. There is a strong senti
ment in Decatur county favoring
progress in this direction and it is
growing stronger every day. Let
Decatur county get in the proces
sion and be among the first to par
ticipate in the many good results
of good roads.
Cairo, our thrifty neighbor has
organized another bank, to be des
ignated The Citizen’s Bank.
John Harris the negro who a
few weeks ago killed Policeman
Draabach in Atlanta has been cap
tured, tried and sentenced to hang
Friday Nov., 13th.
Besides the reformation mania,
Dewie’s host has been stricken
with another plague—the influen
za. This is an excellent opportuni
ty to give an exhibition of his mi
raculous healing power.
Cresceus is again recognized as
the world’s champion trotter, hav
ing made his mile in 1:59 3-4, one
quarter of a second less than the
record recently made by Lou Dil
lon.
The T. P. A. edition of the At
lanta Journal which appeared Sun
day last contained sixty-four pages
ami circulated 50,000 copies. The
Journal is a progressive paper, and
its T, P. A. special has no doubt
brought itjinto additional favor.
The Dothan Siftings has been I
sold to W. T. Hall and E. N. Win
ters. For fourteen years it has
been under the management of
the Williams Bros., and during that
period proved a great benefit and
pleasure to the people of Dothan
and Henry County. We wish it
equal success under the new re
gime.
The Federal National Bank'of I
Pittsburg, with a capital stock of
I>2,ooo,oco failed this week and
has been placed in the receivers
hands. At Baltimore two big
trust companies went to the waU
with liabilities they were unable
to meet amounting to $10,000,000.
These are pretty big figures in the
eyes of the average Georgia crack
er, and make out little wallets look
small. But then we are just as
happy.
The commissioners in behalf of
Canada and the United States who
have been in session in London
for several weeks arbitrating the
claims of the two countries to a
considerable strip of Alaskan ter
ritory stretching along the Pacific
Ocean have mad - their decision in
favor of the United States. The
commission was composed of three
members from each of the disput
ants and a celebrated English
judge who cast the deciding vote
in our favor.
The Canadian commissioners
are trying to act ugly and are so
chagrinned at the outcome that
they refuse to sign the award.
Press dispatches seem to indi
cate that the Canadian people are
considerably wrought up over the
matter and have made their threats
to take the territory by force if it
was not given them on arbitration
Of course Uncle Sam knows that
he is in the right, will not put up
with any back talk from our belli
cose neighbors across the border.
The outcome may mean a short
but inglorious war for the Cana
dians.
The territory was purchased
from Russia along with Alaska in
1867. Neither nation paid much
attention to this strip until it was
found to be rich in gold deposits,
when the greed of Canada became
terribly and suddenly excited.
Now they say they will have it
willy nilly. We shall see.
THAT TILLMAN AFFAIR.
In discussing the acquittal of
Jas, H. Tillman for the killing of
Editor Gonzales of South Carolina,
the Dawson News which always
takes a conservative view of things
has this to say:
"The verdict of not guilty in
the Tillman trial was no more than
was expected by unprejudiced
persons who kept up with tacts
and the testimony in this remark
able case. In the south a man
cannot live and hold his head up
among his people who does not
resent imputations upon his honor,
or who will submit to being pub
lished as a liar and a cur, and
denounced as a common thief.’’
Without commenting upon the
righteousness or travesty of the
Tillman verdict, we can at least
commend what the News has to
say relative to that class of news
papers who imagine that their first
and most important mission is to
abuse and be-little those whose
views chance to diverge from their
own. The daring individual is
sometimes mistaken for the brave
one; and vice versa. Prudence
marks the conduct of the brave
man, and the newspaper that
allows its anxiety to pounce upon
men and matters in general, run
away with prudence, is apt to find
itself so entangled to with
difficulty to extricate itself honor
ably, Individuals do not care to
have their private affairs drawn
into print, nor does the average
newspaper man Give us the con
servative press, always.
Editor Blanton will not estab
lish a paper at Cairo, as previous
ly announced. Owing to a mis
understanding with Mr. W. W.
Linton to whom he had sold out
the South Georgia Progress, it be
came necessary that Mr. Blanton
thould resume management of that
paper; he does not care to assume
the responsibility of running two
papers. The failure of the pro
ject to place a newspaper at Cairo
is a disappointment to the people
of that plucky town.
