THAT TILLMAN VERDICT.
The press of the country almost
unanimously condemns the ver
dict of the South Carolina jury
that acquitted Tillman, the slayer
of Editor Gonzales. The jurors
and the jury system have received
roasts rarely accorded to any mat-
ter o f public interest.
The Columbia State, the news
paper of the murdered editor, de>
nominates the acquittal “The
Crime of Lexington,” and has this
to say anent the travesty upon
justice:
“Hut what is the verdict of thq
public jury, the free and unpur-
chasable opinion of the intelli-
gence of South Carolina ? In ex
pressing our convictions as a citi
zen, we believe the views of that
portion of the public to which ref
erence is made are given voice.
This newspaper has repeatedly
called attention to the miscarriage
of justice in this state; it has often
seen evidence of tampering with
the juries and of sharp practice by
attorneys, the employment of any
and every means to secure the re
lease of the red-handed and it has
begged the public to heed its
warnings. So this is by no means
the first time that justice has been
outraged in our courts, but never
so brazenly, in the full light of
day, have the men sworn to guard,
to shield and to honor that repre-
sentation of public virtue holding
the scales of public justice, so de
filed, corrupted, debauched her.
South Carolina is the victim, ray-
ished of her honor by unnatural
offspring. Well may the worthy
sons and daughters bow their
heads in abject shame.”
DOWIEITES MARCH UPON NEW YORK,
Dowie, of Chicago, who claims
that upon his worthy shoulders
has descended the robe of the
prophet Elijah, has turned his at
tention to the reform of New
York City.
Dowie has been at work in Chi
cago for years and has enlisted
many disciples and followers in
his cause. Now 3,000 of them
under the leadership of the dough
ty Dowie have descended upon the
wicked metropolis and pitched
their tents, and there they propose
to stay until they have the hosts
of Satan on the run. , A pretty
tough job but the Dowieites are
nothing daunted.
We hope and trust that they
will run them into the ocean or
somewhere else, but not let them
escape in this direction. We had
much rather have them confined
to New York unless Dowie’s
crowd propose a war of extermi
nation.
THE NEW ADJUTANT GENERAL.
Governor Terrell has appointed
Judge Sampson W. Harris, judge
of the superior court of Coweta
circuit, to be adjutant getierai of
the state to succeed General Rob
ertson. Judge Harris is a veteran
of the confederate army and has
long been 111 Georgia public life
and is well known and beloved for
his many admirable qualities and
spotless public and private charac
ter.
When General Harris takes
command of the state troops he
will soon master the details of the
situation and become acquainted
with the needs of the military es
tablishment, and it is predicted
that he will bring to the depart
ment a greater enthusiasm than
tas previously existed
After a week of careful consid
eration the commissioners on the
Alaskan boundary dispute, have
reached an agreement and the re
sult is highly gratifying to Amer
ica. All the claims put forth by
America were recognized and es-
| tablished and our citizens will con-
i tinue in possession of all lands
lormir.y claimed in that teriitory
The American boundary line will
start at the head of the Portland
canal and with the exception of
the canal, to which the commis
sion decided that Canada was en
titled, all the waterways to the
fertile Alaskan fields were ceded
to the United States.
The map has not yet been fin
ished nor the actual marking of
the line on the map, but when all
arrangements are completed the
dividing line will be so exactly de
fined that there can be no further
dispute between Canada and
America.
This question of Alaskan bound
ary has been a source of conten
tion for some time between Can
ada and America, and now that
the dispute has been settled and
in our favor we as a nation are
overjoyed. Great disappointment
is felt by the Canadians and they
have expressed much disapproval
and dissatisfaction at the decision
of the commission.

. RIGHTS OF JUGWUMPS.
The authorities of Moultrie,
which is a prohibition town, have
notified the express company that
it will be prosecuted as viola
tors of the law if it continues to
deliver packages containing whis
key to citizens of Moultrie.
The express company has /con
sidered the matter and replied
that as a common carrier it is
compelled to accept, transport and
deliver packages without reference
to what they contain and no mat
ter where and to whom consigned.
Moultrie is determined to enforce
the law and will very likely make
a lest case and have the question
decided by the courts.

The financial conditions of the
money centers of the north still
continue panicky. Trust compa
nies and manipulators are going to
the wall nearly every day. That
time honored wall must be piled
hi?h with the wreckage of busted
concerns by this time. In the
meantime the rest of the country
is peaceful, prosperous and happy.
The wealth and resources of
Georgia were pleasingly stated to
the world in the Georgia edition
of Harper’s Weekly. There was
a short article on Decatur county,
dealing principally with the tobac
co industry, and a beautiful pict
ure ot a steamboat landing at the
Bainbridge wharf. We patiently
await the results.

The South should receive £500,-
000.000 for her cotton crop this
year on the basis ot 10 cents per
pound That is a good deal of
money. With her other abundant
and valuable resources she should
lay aside for A rainy day and be
independent of,the rest of the
world for a while.
The arbitration of railway fran
chises has cost the state a' pretty
penny. It is said that the state
has paid to its arbitrators this
year over £22,000 and the rail
roads have had to pay theirs about
the same sum. It is a good thing
for the arbitrators.
South Carolina justice is not so
blind. She sees well enough to
see no harm in an armed man
killing an unarmed man because
he said some ugly things about
him last year.
Hearst is in Atlanta this week.
Of course he will there decide
whether he wants the president’s
job or not. He could not decide
until he consulted Atlanta.
It is our opinion that there will
be something doing in county pol-
itics next year.
