Fatal Accident at Chattahoochee.
On Tuesday morning last about
eight o’clock Hen Bethune, an
inspector for the Standard Oil
Company fell from a tank car load
ed with oil at Chattahoochee,
Fia., and received injuries of an
internal nature from the effects of
which he died at one o’clock
aboard the Steamer Gertrude on
its up trip to this city. The re
mains were taken from the boat
when it reached this city where it
was placed in charge of G. B.
Brackin’s undertaking establish'
ment. The dead man bore no
evidences of his identity and it
has been imposs'ble to locate his
people.
As an employee of the Standard
Oil Co. he was held in esteem and
his accidental death is very much
regretted, Mr. C. B. Townsend,
agent of the company was in the
city Tuesday and gave some direc
tions concerning the disposition of
the dead man’s remains.
It appears that no one saw the
accident, and that Mr. Harrison,
another agent of the company
was the fi r st to reach his side.
The Steamer Gertrude which is
operated by the company was at
Chattahoochee at the time, and
took the injured man aboard to
bring him to this city, not think
ing that he was so dangerously
injured,
A Righteous Appeal.
The good people of the south-,
eastern portion of the county are
very much concerned over the con
struction of a public bridge across
the Ochlockonee river at Hadley’s
Ferry on the Thomas and Deca'
tur county dividing line. We
understand that they have laid the
matter before ths Thomas county
board of commissioners and that
body has submitted a proposition
to bear one'half the expense.
Thus far our county board have
taken no steps to secure this con-
venience though the case is now
before them. At this time the
bridge across the river at the old
Collins water mill has been wash'
ed away and has not been replaced.
A bridge at Hadley’s Ferry is a
seeming necessity, the commis'
sioners should respect and we
hope they will do so
The bridge if constructed would
come under the recent act of the
legislature which recites that the
cost of construction of county line
bridges shall be shared on a basis
of the propetty valuations of the
two counties.
Card of Thanks.
I take this method of thanking
my friends who so kindly aided
and assisted me during the illness
of my husband who departed this
life on the 20th inst., feeling
grateful as I do for their timely
assistance in this sore bereave*
ment, 1 trust that our Heavenly
Father will strew their paths with
His richest blessings and after
death give them a home in heaven.

McRee Brothers Plead Guilty.
Before Judge Speer in the U. S.
court at Savannah, this week, the
McRee Brothers, of Lowndes
county, plead guilty to thirteen in
dictments for holding negroes in
peonage.
It will be remembered that at
various times during the past
twelve months grave charges were
made against these gentlemen.
Judge Speer in passing sentence
suspended the penalties in eleven
of the cases and imposed a tine of
$2,000 on each of the men.
-'The McRee Brothess are among
the most prominent citizens of
Lowndes county, ih^v living at
Kinderlon, where ttu-y were ac
tively engaged in farming, turpen
tine operating and saw milling.
The offense to which their plea of
guilty was entered was that of vol
untarily assuming debts of negroes
on their promise to perform cer-
tain work, and then forcing the ne
groes against their will to remain
on their plantation and perform
their obligations.
The secret service detective who
worked up the case was given
every assistance bv the McRees
in getting the case started, they
concealing nothing. To this fact
is probably due Judge Speer’s
leniency in suspending sentence
in eleven of the indictments.

he has fallen.
