THE POLITICAL SITUATION.
The Republican Convention fin
ished its work at Chicago last
Saturday night after the most
stormy convention in the history
of the party.
President Taft was nominated
for re-election, as was also
President Shprman. The party
almost killed itself during the
great gathering, and it is to be
hoped that the DemocratsV.ill be
able to put the finishing touches
to the g. o. p. elephant in Novem
ber.
The "steam roller” was used
freely to crush out Roosevelt with
all his wonderful following, with
the result that Roosevelt lias
severed his connection with the
Republcian party and formed a
new party to be known as the
“Progressive Party”. He hr.s a
powerful backing in the West
and is said to have received strong
encouragement from the North
and East with a good sprinkling
from the South. A convention
of the new party will be called
some time in August. At that
time a campaign will be launched
throughout the country in the in-
of the Progressive party,
it. .s believeu lot- most stormy
times in politics known since the
war will be witnessed in the
United States between now and
the November election.
The Democrats are in session
in Baltimore this week. Lip to
this time (Thursday morning)
nothing has been done except to
elect the temporary and perman
ent chairman, and probably the
report of the Credentials Com
mittee. A storm arose at the
very outset over the selection of
the temporary chairman, what is
known as the reactionaries.stand*
ftattersor conservatives put ing
up Judge Alton B. Parker of New
York and the Progressives put
ting up Senator Kern from In-
dianna. Mr. Kern withdrew in
favor of William Jennings Bryan

The fight up to this writing has
been between the two factions of
the party. There is no telling
just what the result will be as to
the nomination. The strength
seems t o be be t ween. \V cod row j
Wilson and Champ Clark. It isj
charged by many that Clark has]
gone over to the Wall Street and
Tamany crowd. If so. that al
most. insures his election. It may
be however that the Progressives
under the leadership of Bryan,
Wilson and others, will be able
to head them off.
Under the present condition of
things the Decocratic party is
trembling in the balance, with
many of the delegates wanting to
do the wise tiling and best thing,
and with others seemingly eare-
ing nothing for the go .d of the
party just so certain men are de
feated.
It is believed that a considera
ble majority of the delegates are j
progressive, and thousands all j
over the country are firm i.i the
belief that it will require the
leadership of a strong, progres-
sve candidates to carry the
Democratic banner to victory in
November - A progressive can
t>eat Taft, and it will require a
mighty strong progressive to be
a match in the field lor Roosevelt.
The nomination should be made
by tonight (Thursday.)
