“ THE THEATRE”
Messrs. Enrroits The article riffned “Sid
,]obk” in your last issue, presents this subject
iu its proper light, an<l I am glad to see, there
are some disposed to publicly .sustain this posi
tion, defiantly and gallantly obeying their own
udgnients, rather than yielding to the dicta
tion of interested, capricious and affected indig
nation.
J am one, who has long and earnestly dis
puted the power and control of Preachers,
over the “ rational amusements” of the day,
so ably, truthfully, and neirxfully, vindicated
iiy Siddons;” uo matter what may be their
denominational or sectarian views, 1 condemn
their condemnation <if public amusements, and
their endeavor to frigiden silly men and weak
women, into eschewing dancing the theatre
and concert rooms. I have seen white eraralt
absolutely drip with perspiration from the vio
lent labor of some harangner against a dan. ing
school, which in the distorted imagination of
the talker was but a prelude to vice arid itn- .
morality, as if virtue walked with shuffling and
awkward gait, and was inseparably associated i
with vulgarity.
In the ideifS of these self-constituted para
gons, the concert room must be abandoned,
and shunned as a house on tire. The eultiva- >
tion of singing (an art which angels practice)
must Ire confined in its strains to the parlor,
and a sweet voice melting the heart in its
stream of melody, must like a caged Bird, war
ble its notes at home, and its strains be fasten
ed to tlus tire side. Those who have no means
or time for cultivation. must remain in ignor
ance, for those who live by giving public en
tertainments, it would Ire tin to patronize. 1 he
chaste and lovely female gifted by nature
with a voice as soft us moonlight, who smgs in
public to support perhaps a famdy steeped in
the tears of orphanage, whose mental and mitr
al cultivation depend upon her exertions, is in
preacher parlance to Ire slimmed as a pesti
lence; yon listen to sermons and must pay for
harsh words,-ungraceful jeatures, and tint of
ten rabid, envenomed, and bigoted nonsens...
but to pay for listening to the cultivated melir
dv of the human voice, or witness the perfor
mance of some play, gleaming with the glori s
of an intellectual godliness, is pronoum-ed in-I
consistent with a Christian profession. The
judgement of condemnation is pronounced
without even witnessing the performance, and
Blanche, Tay and Sweetheart are expected to
unite in the cry.
These views v ere dieted by yonr fa'eti d
correspondent in his article on the Drama. —
For if there is a concentration of bitterness or
invective against any one species of aomseme"’.
it is specifically and particularly directed and
concentrated against the theatre. For
their hatred is pestilent, and every other vice in
their imagination is connected with it. f lic the
atre must be avoided for it induces to ,’rink. is
rme charge frequently made. 1 deny tie alle
gation, for it ha* a contrary eflect; it ii.o.ici s
men to leave Bur rooms, uiid 'i/ r * th n i’t
more rational, and pleasing enjoyment: but
suppose we concede toe iliit t:i«t men din... al
the theatre, ilid not Tam <> *hinter
“ Al the LorJ'e ton* e’en on Sunday
Brink, wi Kirlen Jane, Till Munday.”
The consequence wasm.,er ignorantly press
ed that churches induce 1 to driml’neas. al
though many a rant has brought before the
mind visions of parched and barren wa-t.-s,
and forced one iu his somno)»seent mood to
exclaim,
I hud a dream, which »«" not nil my eye.
The deep wells were exhausted. and the pumps
Delivered nothing but a windy groan.
To those who plied their liandles. and the clouds
Hung, like exsuceous sponges in the sky.
Morn came, and went, and came, and brought no rain,
And men forgot their hunger, in the dread
Di’utter failure us all drink, the.r chops
Were all athirst for something potable,
— The laud was dry.
Day passed, defrauded of its moistest meals
Break fastieia, milklesa, tealess, souple—. puno’il.’ts.
All things were dry——
— : there w ere none.
And dirty linen lost all heart and hope
Os due ablution, shirts were worn a month.
White pocket haudaerchiefs were abandoned.
And washing seemed to threaten that henceforth
it must be named among lost arts.
Drmithiness did reign Queen over all, she was the
universe."
Snch dreams are more natural to churches than
Theatre*. But are the scenes drawn from real
life placed with an art that makes nature live
again, calculated to produce a demoralizing ef
fect upon the mind: then arc nature and rd io
ion enemies, bnt to disprove such an imposition
and absurdity, we might only instance the play
of »he “Gamester” which alone, has done more
to pre rout Gambling than all the sermons ever
preached. The curse and horror of jealousy,
lias been more vividly impressed, keenly felt,
and morally enforced upon the judgment, by
one scene in Macbeth than all the essays I >. I t.’s
have ever written. The infamy of vice, its
temptations, trial.' and deracinating effects have
found sterner, stronger and more solemn ut
terance from the stage, than ever echoed with
in church walls. The struggles of virtue, her
charm of protection, leading her to ultimate
vindication and triumph, have lusn portrayed
in brighter colors and awakened more honest,
permanent, nnd moral resolves in a Theatre,
than in any Cathedral, that ever glistened its
spire in the sunshine. Drunkenness is rebuked,
vice hated, follies derided and virtue reward
ed by the teachings of the Drama, and yet men
say it is calculated to demoralize. 1 lie nimd
upon which it has this effect, must be afflicted
with a proness to vice, which it would require
more than a legion of Boman soldiers to guard
from temptation.
But in the merciless attacks made ujion the
Theatre, too frequently we find embraced an
assault upon the character of the "actors;" we
pity the a-ssailments, while we smile at the itn
potency and pusalanimity of the assault; many
a gifted son*of genius has appeared upon the
tioardsof a Theatre, whose purity of private
life would b« blackened by the reflection of a
comparison between him and his assailants.
The companions of the most learned, refined
and noble in thought, in mien and action, they
rise far above the vulgarity of their slanderers.
Many a child of nature endowed w ith brillian
cy of mind and courtliness ot manner has ap
peared upon the stage to delight, instruct and
interest, whose fame was as pure as the unstain
ed robe of an angel. Tim wife of the great, the
mother of statesmen, well may they laugh at
, the wormliucu of those who attempt to abuse
I them.
I By aeknov. lodging thei- just deserts, by pat
ronizing their performances, by emancipating
I ourselves from the harness of priestlincss, and
• indulging in the pleasures which art, gen
ius and civilization have executed for our en
joyment, we may thus elevate ourselves, and
refine the intellect, polish the manner*, instruct
the mind, soften the sympathies es the heart,
and thus learn the beauties of virtue and ab
hor the rascaldom of vice. GARRICK.
TO NXAGAIiA FALLS.
The following execrable " blaul: verse” was
perpetrated, we understand, by a distinguished
member of a highly respectable literary Club,
organized in this city ;
I have seen thee, Niagara, child of the floods,
Whose God is rain, thiue eyes of sunshine
And thy hair of foam, and thought
Thou wert not beautiful; thou art a cold.
Moist “demnition body," and! can’t love thee,
Roaring,foaming, pouring, ragingall the time—
What frets thee! Art thou sick, or sore, or
mad
That Nature thus has made thee, and does
Thy voice hiss, and howl, and murmur with
black discontent,
Or is thy fury natural or put on ? stop and
Let me talk to thee, with my heart 1 pity all
Your throes it nature thus has framed thee
miserable.
Does the thunder hurt vou—l’ll puli it out
And hurl it to the clouds where it belongs
And let the rain drops hiss upon its head
And not thy life blood. Stop, Niagara—
Don’t talk so loud ; 1 am not deaf,
But can hear the softest whisper ever
Nature spoke, to hush the rose bud folded in
Its tiny leaves to sleep—let drop, tliy tears
Over the deep abyss, like weeping Niobe
And not with such a rush and splash
As to make grief itself a terror. J try thine
Eyes—-brush oil'the white foam with thy
Hands, and let the Rainbow's jewel thy fair
Form—push back the floods to where
They started—let the Sun walk in the deeps
Beneath thee, and, when they’re dry, you
And I'll go down to sun ourselves and
Talk, and on my arm thy gentle form I’ll
Lay, and press thee to my breast and love
Thee; I’ll whisper love songs in thine ear;
I’ll give thee purple words to feed upon
Shook by thy hand from oil’ the branches of •
My thoughts; I’l pres- them to th? bps
And let thee suck the juice of love within,
1 11 catch the floating sunbeams and weave
them
With thy hair, and crust them o'er with jewels,
I’ll pn—• thy han 1 and swear by Earth
By all her mountains, fields and Hoods—to love
Thee ever —1 11 swear by Heaven and all its
Angels—by Hell and all its Devils—still to
love.
And I will ding to you, as a sinner's prayer
(.'tings to the knees of God pleading for mercy.
•I’iiirt, you still rush on and frenzied fling
Your -pray into my hue as if to show
Your dislike to met —well, go on ;
I will not quarrel w itli thy taste although I
Tliidt it ba I: I can feel as proud as thou
For I don’t love thee. Thou art cold and have
No passions, no allections or emotions ; and
I inuy not embrace thee, therefore
I cannot love thee, even if I would. There's
nothing
Human in thy form—there’s nothing
Pleasant in tliy voice—it's harsh and horrible. |
Methinks there is but one place tit lor thee, j
And on the bed of death I d marry you
To earn vou to bell and give the devils lioli- j
day. ’
