I r or*"** r —■* — ■ I TEE METHODIST PREACHER. Mr. Grayson, in his new Poem, entitled “The Country,” draws the following eulogist- j ie portrait of the Methodist Minister— Such thought thev gain from men in humble guise, Though rude in garb, in saintly wisdom wise, Trained bv no college to their simple creed. And bob! and hardv as the Bocks they feed, Tha Bible furnishing tbeir pulpit lore, The leathern saddle-bags their earthly store. The horse their help, companion, friend, they go Through summer’s burning heat and winter's snow— Climb the rough mountain, swim the icy stream. Dare the wolfs howl and brave the panther's scream; The fallen leaves tbeir bed. at evening’s elose Itrond sheltering oaas invite them to repose ; Tbeir stops no danger, toil nor want delays, The forest echoes to their song of praise. As, strong in fa.th, through pathless woods they I ride, The sun or mossy trunk of trees their guide, And steadfast like the sun to place and day, Hasten to teach the Borderer how to pray ; Religion's pioneer, to do or hear What martyrs suffer, or what heroes dare, They preach with simple eloquence, reprove. How tn rough hearts the seed of Christian love - - Rough hearts but honest no devices there Clothe glib hypocrisy in forms of prayer; Plain, as their homespun garb of household dyes, But pure the faith that leads them to the skies. Wit and Humor. Bishop Ames, of the Methodist Church, w hile i preaching in the Third Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis, “got off a pretty good is known that the in inhabitants of Illiinois are called “ Stickers,” as those of Indiana are called “ Hoosiers.” The Bishop, it appears, once got lost on a prairie in Illinois, and came very near sinking under fatigue and exposure. At length the discovered a cabin in the dis tance. He got to the door and knocked, and the long looked for Sucker (succor) came.' The New York Tribune says a great friend of the late Mr. Wesbater said that he never thought the statesman and orator so admira ble as when, under a summer sunset, a party of them rowed home to Marshfield from a fish ing and chowder excursi n, and Mr. Webster, jolliest among the jolly, with his great, hearty voice, made the shores resound to the singing ; of “Zip Coon.” Witldwhat Titanic comicality that negro song came from bis lips, and how they roared with laughter, the performer, per- i haps, enjoying it the most of tiiein all. “My schoolmaster,” says Carlyle, “ was a good Latin scholar, and of the human mind he knew this much—that it had a faculty called memory, which might lie readied through the : muscular integument by die application of bir chen rods. “ Blessed is he,” saith the Book of Mormon, “ who bloweth hisown horn; for whoso blow eth not his own horn, the same shall not be blowed.” Likewise: “Whoso bloweth his own horn, the same shall bo blowed with a vengeance.” Franklin seized lightning by the tail, held it fast, and tamed it; Morse put clothes on it and taught it how to read and write and do errands. The subject of a verdict of a recent coroner's jury on a man who had died in a state of inebria tion, was “ Death by banging—round a rum »hop." “It is a curious fact.” says some etymolo gist, “that it is only the female mosquito that torments us.” A bachelor says it is not at all “ curious.” One of the amusements of the ladies of Par is hi to walk at the bottom of the Seine in div ing bells. ‘•What was the use of the eclipse t” asked a young lady. “ Oh, it gave the sun time for reflection,” re plied a wag. During a recent election a candidate called upon a tradesman and solicited his vote. ” I would rather vote for old Nick than for you,” was the reply. “ But in case your friend should not come forward,” said the candidate, “ might 1 then count upon your assistance 1” The following will tit more than one we know of:— BOOTS. These boots were never made for me— They are too short by half; I want them large enough, d'ye see, To cover all the cult. Why sir, said Wait, with stifled laugh, To alter them 1 11 try ; But if they cover all the cats They must \x Jive foot high. Should trousers procured on credit be con sidered breeches of trust ( Would you say a lady was dressed loud who was covered all over with bugles < Gold and silver are, in these days, the most prized and effective of all belle-metalt. The world is but an opera show. We come—look round—and then we go. To prevent dogs from getting mad—cut their tails off close behind t’jeir ears. There is a good epigram on “ a drunkard,” which we saw in an ancient almanac: He tumbles about like a find we must own. For by keeping himself up, he has knock’d him self down; Yet if he continues oft draining his cup, By falling so often he'll knock himself up. k CLOSE QTESTIOX. Said Ijuly Bab to Lady Sue, “ I wish I were as blest as you ; Your husband is polite and kind, Os gentle manners, generons mind. Obliging, gay—in friendship warm, M’ith every quality to charm.” “ Pray, Lady Bab,” cried Lady Sue, “ How came my husband — cntr» nous — So bnotns io yov . r ' Grain Cradles.
