IS REPORTED
Red Bay, On Island of Andros,
Totally Destroyed.
CORPSES BY THE HUNDREDS.
An Eye Witness Estimates That
Six Hundred Lives
Were Lost.
According to a Miami, Fla., dispatch
to The Jacksonville Tiines-Union aud
Citizen, Captain Dillon, of thesteamer
Cocoa, states that the town of Red
Bav, on the island of Andros, twenty
miles southwest of Nassau, was swept
away in the recent tropical 'hurricane
and about 300 lives lost.
An eye witness of the -storm esti
mated that the loss of life on the island
was fully 000. Scattered through the
wreck of houses at Red Bay after the
storm subsided, he said, were hund
reds of corpses of persons of all ages
and classes.
Captain Dillion saps the wind blew
at the rate of ninety miles an hour at
Nassau, with occasional gusts which
reacl>ed the velocity of 105 miles an
hour.
WILL ARIMEST WHITECAPS.
Rig lUaM.mtiuc Held In Greenwood, S.
C-, and Action Taken.
Tlpc mass meeting to consider out
rages recently perpetrated on negroes
in that section met in Greenwood. S.
C., Friday pursuant to adjournment
on Wednesday. The committee made
its report that no effort had been made
to excuse, shield or whitewash any
one, but that diligent inquiry had
failed to elicit information sufficient
to recommend the arrest of any one.
They had made the discovery, how
ever, that the situation was not as bad
as reported iu the newspapers or as
they thought it to be. While it was
all the outgrowth of the Phoenix riot,
it had no direct connection with it.
The several whippings at as many dif
ferent times and places were probably
due to as many causes.
The meeting evidently thought the
committee had not been as thorough
as it might have been en the investiga
tion and several of the negroes who
had been whipped, and who were pres
ent, were called for and questioned,
first having been pledged protection
by the white people by e. unanimous
vote, for any information they might
give that would lead to the arrest of
at least some of the guilty parties.
The tales they told were harrowing
in the extreme. Especially is this
true erf old man Jake Richardson, as
he told how they dragged him from a
sick bed, beat him and assaulted bis
wife. No one who looked iu bis face
doubted the truth of his statement,
hut unfortunately he would not di
vulge the names of any of bis assail
ants.
Five other negroes gave evidence
•gainst Joe Jones, Jesse Cauley, Wil
liam Wilson and Robert McCaulau, all
white men, sufficient to warrant their
arrest, and the sheriff will execute pa
pers against them at once. All the
evidence went to show that there was
a dozen or more of the wliiteeappers
and still others may be arrested.
feeling over the matter is very
much wrought up, but no further
trouble is apprehended.

Where Files Go la. W'lnter.
Rome one has asked, “Where do
flies go in the winter?” This is a
question of some interest, for a house
fly is born fully grown and of natural
size, and there are no little flies of
the same species, the small ones oc
casionally observed being different in
Lind from the large ones. The house
fly does not bite or pierce the skin,
but gathers its food by a comb or
rake or brush-like tongue, with which
it is able to scrape the varnish from
covers of books, and it thus tickles
the skin of persons upon whom 14
alights, to feed upon the perspiration.
A fly Is a scavenger, aud is a vehicle
by which contagious diseases are
spread. It poisons wounds, and may
carry deadly virus from decaying or
ganic matter into food. It retires
from sight at the beginning of winter,
but where it goes few people know.
If a search of the house be made
flies will be found In great numbers
secreted in warm places in the roof
or between the partitions of floors.
Last winter an architect had occa
sion to examine a roof, and found
around the chimney myriads of flien
hibernating comfortably. • and suffi
ciently alive to fly when disturbed
“In overpowering elouds.” No doubt
this is a favorite winter resort for
these creatures.—New York Press.

Chain Frodneetl by Hens,
A flock of 100 lions will produce in
egshells several pounds of chalk an
nunlly, and yet not a pound of the
substance may exist within the cir
cuit of their feeding grounds. The
materials of the manufacture are
found in the food consumed and in
the sand, brick dust, bits of bones,
etc., which hens and other birds are
constantly picking up. The instinct
is keen for these apparently innutri
tions and refractory substances, and
they are devoured with as eager a
relish as the cereals or insects. If
hens are confined to barns or outbuild
ings it is obvious that the egg-produc
ing machiuers cannot be kept long in
action unless the materials for the
shell are supplied.
