I xtracts from Kingston (N. Y.i Ga

of 1799.
Through the courtesy of Mr. A.
S. Morgan, we are permitted to
publish wilin’ extracts from The
l ister (’ouoty Gazette, printed at
Kingston, N. Y , in January, 1-SOD.
The paper carries inverted column
rules, mourning for the death of
George Washington. It gives the
full proceedings of the house and
senate upon the death of the father
of ilis Country, including an elo
quent and tender speech hy Gen
eral Marshal when introducing res
olutions in the house and the reply
of President Adams to the house
and senate.
The paper is a four-page folder,
four columns wide of what is known
to printers as IG-cm measure, the
lines being longer than the modern
standard. It does not carry the
date of the month, indicating that
it was published monthly. It is
yellow from age, hut the print is
clear and distinct. The edition is
volume 11, No. BS, and happens* to
Eh- the one which gives all the de
tails of the passing awav of Amer
ica’s greatest hero, making it a
souvenir of much value. It was
handed down to Mr. Morgan by
his grandfather.
The account of the burial of
General W ishington is couched in
the following language:
WASHINGTON KNTO.M BED.
George Town, I>ec. 20, 17".)!).
On Wednesday In ft the mortal
part of Washington the Great, the
Father of His Country and the
Friend of Man, was eonligned to
the tomb, with solemn honors and
funeral pomp. A multitude of per
sons a Him hied from many miles
around at Mount Vernon, the choice
abode' and laft residence of the
illultrious chief. There were the
groves —the spacious avenues, the
beautiful and sublime scenes, the
noble manfion —hut, alas, the
align ft inhabitant was now no more.
That great soul was gone. His
mortal part was there, indeed, hut
ah how affecting! how awful the
etH'ctacle of such worth aval great
ness, thus, to mortal eyes fallen!
Yes! fallen! fallen!
In the long nud lofty Portico,
where the hero walked in all bin
glory, now lay the fhrouded corpse.
The countenance. ftill composed and
serene, seemed to depress the dig
nity of the spirit, which lately
dwelt in that lifeless form. There
those who paid the la ft sad honors
t< the benefactor of his country,
jfcook an impressive—a farewell view.
On the ornament at the, head of
the cofijn was inscribed si- hue ad

coffin fu.oin \ nno and on the silver
plate

Between ;> and 4 o’clock the
sound of artillery from a veffel in
the river, firing minute guns, awoke
rtfrefh our solemn sorrow —the]
corpse was removed—a hand of

the soul in all 'the tenderness of
woe.
Tilt* procession was formed and
moved on in the following order:
Cavalry, Infantry, Guard, Mttfie,
Clergy —with arms reversed.

When the procession had arrived
at ific : "fWlWW of the elevated lawn !
on the bank of the Potomac, where
the family vault i placed, the cav

toward the Mount and formed their
lines —the clergy, the Masonic
brothers and the citizens descended
to the vault and the funeral service
of the church was performed.
The tiring was repeated from the
veffel in the river and the sounds
echoed from the woods and hills
around. .
Three general discharges by the
infantry, the cavalry and 11 pieces
of artillery which lined the hanks of
the Patomuc hack of the vault paid
the last tribute to the entombed
Commander in Chief of the Armies
of the Cnited States and tire depart

The sung was now setting. Alas!
the Son of Glory was set forever!
