COL. JOHNS'
WET BLANKET
I am very much amused at my
distinguished opponent in trying
to evade every issue of importance
in his long and well-written ad
dress to the voters of this, the 27th
Senatorial Dist.
It seems that he thinks that lie
Bin spread a wet blanket over the
District and put out the fire that
is burning in the hearts and con
science of an out-lawed constitu
ency, by telling them of the little
insignificant things lie did in the
house of Representatives.
My friend boasts of his great
love for the Constitution and yet
he served two sessions in the I louse
and never at any time raised his
voice against the encroachments
on our time-honored document.
When we were being ordered as to
what we should eat, wear, do, or
speak, he was as silent as a clam.
Every law that is sapping the
very fundamentals of our blood
bought liberties, both State and
Federal, were passed in the name
of the Constitution. It lias liven
the worst abused and out-lawed
document on record. When wom
en and children were denied their
own money to buy bread, and were
shot down like dogs, it was claim
ed to be Constitutional. “O Con
stitution how many crimes have
been committed in thy name?”
He says he is of the opinion we
have too much legislation, yet lie
would have you believe he was
instrumental in passing more bills
than I can recount, and it did not
take experience to do it. See?
Its what has been done the peo
ple are worrying over, and the fu
ture furnishes our only hope.
He asks the question: “Do you
want service based on experience
and capacity?”
I am willing to leave it to the
voters if we have not had an over
dose of experience and capacity,
of a sort, have almost bankrupt
our State and Nation.
I believe the voters of the Dist.
are perfectly willing to try a little

common sense and not so much
“capacity.”
After saying much you are left
to guess as to how lie stands on the
following questions:
Are you in favor of minority
rule?
Are you willing to be bossed by
secret committees?
Ilow do you stand on the League
of Nations?
How do you regard Romanism?
Are you in favor of jailing peo
ple for expressing an honest opin
ion?
Do you favor simplyfying the
laws so the common people can
understand them?
Arc you in favor of free school
books for the common school ?
Do you think the rich pay their
pro-rata share of the tax?
Why was it you refused to sub
mit your candidacy to the voters
of Harrow county, to decide who
should represent them, as its Har
row’s time to elect the representa
tive’
Did you not 'say you were run
ning for the Senate as a stepping
stone for the Judgeship two years
hence. Answer.
