PAY THE PENSIONS IN LUriP.
After a careful examination of
the acts of the last general as
sembly of the state of Georgia, I
begin to think, what did they do?
This question might be very
readily answered, ;if I were to
denominate the entire body with
a few exceptions, that they were
a set of speculators, nothing more
or less.
. When you consider their acts
most of our reasonable citizens
will be compelled to agree that a
majority of them were specula
tors in the simplest and truest
meaning of the word,.
Our Confederate soldiers —the
men whom every citizen should
honor for their brave deeds and
hardships—have been by this
body of would-be lawmakers,
denominated as incapable of at
tending to their own business; in
other words they seemed to say
and did say that this noble class
of men needed a guardian and
could not manage the insignifi
cant amounts paid them as pen
sions. All of this small amount
should be paid to them at once,
then maybe they could have used
it to some advantage. The poor
widows, most of whom live on
their pensions, should have the
SIOO. They reduced this to S6O,
which is an act I think each one
of the law makers should be
ashamed of the remainder of
their lives.
I am in favor of giving every
confederate soldier who did act
ual service a pension and paying
all of it at once, and giving the
widows SIOO and paying this
in a lump to the Widows. Their
pensions are not gifts, but a debt
the state owes these noble men;
then lets pay them and all of it
at once for the year.
Let the next general assembly
correct their wrongs. Let the
people see that men are elect
ed this year to represent them
in both houses, that will see to it
that the above laws be repealed
and full laws to this class be en
acted. Very truly,
' Lucian L. Ray.
