CORN CLUB BOYS URGED TO
PREPARE FOR BUTTS FAIR
Important Letter From Di^tridt
Agent About County Exhibit
Union City, Ga., Sep. 19, 1914
Dear Boys and Girls: Owing
to the extreme conditions caused
by the war in Europe the people
of Butts county who were promo
ting a County Fair believe that it
would be unfair to attempt to
call on the people of the county
to support the kind of fair that
was contemplated in the begin
ning.
Hence the 18th day of Novem
ber, Georgia Products Day, has
been set for a general Home-
Coming Day for Butts county,
when the Corn Club Boys and
the Canning Club Girls will hold
their county contest and exhibit
their products. This is going to
be a gala day for Butts county
and the promoters of the county
fair idea will have something
more definite to state in the near
future. This letter is to inform
the boys and girls to get ready
for the big day.
No boy will gather his acre of
corn before Oct. Ist nor later
than Nov. Ist. Each boy must
have two disinterested parties toj
measure his land and corn, unless 1
he can get the County Demon
strator, H. L. Worsham, or the
Superintendent of Schools, C. S.
Maddox, to do this for him. In
this case the name of either of
these gentlemen or both signed
to the reports will be sufficient
certification. Any boy having a
prospect of 100 bushel yield or
more per acre must have either
the County Demonstrator or the
County Superintendent of Schools
present when the land and corn
is measured and be signed by one
or both of them in addition to
any disinterested parties.
The hoys will have two reports
to be filled out; one of which has
gone to each boy and one that
Phone 8 for the famous Sweet
Violet line of canned vegetables.
will reach him soon. Both of
these reports must accompany
the ten-ear exhibit at the contest.
Do not send these reports to any
one. No credit for fodder will be
allowed, hence no boy should
charge aginst his acre the pulling
of fodder. Corn will all be reckon
ed at $1 per bushel; rent of land
$5 per acre straight.
The entire crop of corn must
be weighed; then weigh out 100
pounds in the shuck from one
side and another 100 pounds from
the other side of pile; shuck each
100 pounds separately, weigh
these separate amounts of shelled
corn, add the two amounts and
divide by two. This gives the
average amount of shelled corn
in each hundred weight in the
shuck. Then multiply the weight
in the shuck by this average and
divide by 56, and this gives the
number of bushels shelled corn.
Any boy failing to follow these
rules cannot enter the contest for
a prize. .
As Butts county oKpect9 to
carry a County Boys Corn Club
exhibit.to the State Fair in Ma
con, it will be well for every boy
who has a good average acre of
I corn to gather his corn and have
! his ten-ear exhibit and all reports
well filled out and ready to bring
to Mr. Worsham’s office in Jack
son by Oct. 27th, so that he can
get it to the fair in time.
Call on Mr. Worsham for any
other information.
