USING SCIENCE IN FARMING
Many Farmer* Imagine Modern Meth
ods to Be Subtle Theories,
Senseless and Useless.
Webster says science is:
Knowledge; knowledge of principles
or facts.
Many farmers have a disposition to
sneer at science in farming. They
imagine science to be a subtle theory
introduced by college professors to
dazzle and impress man with their su
periority, but altogether senseless and
therefore useless.
But science is nothing more than
knowledge—to know, not to guess or
theorize. It means proof of princi
ples and facts.
Science in farming is to know the
soil; how the air and moisture and
fertilized work upon it; how seed are
formed, grow and ripen.
Science is to know- when to plow
and sow and reap; how to make every
step and every swing of the arms
count for something; how- to save and
prevent waste and how to increase the
yield of seed and animals at the least
expense.
Science means just every day horse
sense applied to every-day affairs. It
is to think and know and find out
about things by one’s own experience
or by the experience of others.
To Kill Lice on Roses.
The lice on your rose plants can
be gotten rid of. Dip the bush in
water slightly warmer than the "hand
will bear, repeating the treatment sev
eral times at intervals of a day or two.
Dusting thoroughly with tobacco
powder will also be effectual.
The white and green lice, which at
tack the tender rose plants early In
the spring may be destroyed by hot
suds from the Monday’s wash. Dash
it on from different angles, as hot
as can be handled, and the pests will
disappear.
Such an application once a week
will keep the foliage clean and pro
mote the growth and health of the
plants.
Money for Automobiles.
The money spent for automobiles
last year would be enough to keep but
ter on the tables of all the people in
the United States for three years. This
would seem that the cities, by U6ing
the labor in the manufacture of these
compete with the country for laboi
and they should pay the difference in
the price they pay for milk and butter.
Mothers! Have Your Children Worms?
Are they feverish, restless, nervous,
irritable, dizzy or constipated? Do they
continually pick their nose or grind
their teeth? Have they cramping
pains, irregular and ravenous appetite?
These are all signs of worms. Worms
not only cause your child suffering, but
stunt its mind and growth. Give “Kie
kapoo Worm Killer” at once. It kill:
and removes the worms, improves voui
child’s appetite, regulates stomach, liv
er and bowels. The symptoms disappear
and your child is made happy and heal
thy, as nature intended. All druggists
or by mail, 25c.

Ash Heap for Grandma.
A certain little fellow loves his
grandmother dearly. The other day,
hearing her talk, perhaps a bit mourn
fully, of growing old, the child was
much troubled. “Grandma,” he ask
ed, his baby arms about the beloved
neck, “when you do get old will mam
ma throw you out on the ash heap,
like she does all our old things?”
