The Carmichael Brothers' A-
Buggies Were Ultimately L_
BY KEVIN COOK
Time was when mom, dad, and the rest of the
family would put on their finest attire for a ride in
the old horse and buggy. If it was Sunday, they
might visit friends or relatives, or perhaps their
destination would be the little valley near the
stream, the perfect location for a picnic lunch.
Whatever the reason, a horse and buggy ride was
a looked-forward-to event back in the late 1800’s, and
these curious vehicles were the era’s dominant form
of transportation.

SUMMER HEAT
You can’t really beat the
heat.
Whether it’s the heat or the
humidity, or both, it’s hot in
almost all of the United
States in July. After weeks of
sweating and steaming, it’s
not uncommon to find the
heat is beginning to wear you
down.
You can’t do anything
about the outside tempera
ture. You can avoid it if
you’re fortunate enough to
work and live in air
conditioned comfort, but it
still will be hot outside.
The American Medical
Association points out that
there are some things you
can do to be more comfort
able - things that can help
you beat the heat.
Stay out of the sun as much
as possible, especially during
the middle of the day when
rays are hottest. Wear light,
loose clothing. The ladies
have the edge over the men
in this respect. Drink more
liquids than usual, but take
extra salt only on your
physician’s advice, particu
larly if you have liver or
kidney trouble or a heart
condition.
Take a shower or dip in the
pool once or twice a day to
cool off. Get plenty of rest
and sleep. Eat your regular
diet and don’t go overboard
on t >ld cuts and salads,
unless you like them anyway.
Get up early in the morning
to do your heavy work on the
lawn or garden. Or work at
dusk in the evening, but try to
avoid heavy exertion during
the hottest hours of the day.
There is sound physical
reason behind the siesta
custom of the tropics.
You need exercise in the
summer as well as in the
winter, but don’t overdo it,
especially on extra hot days.
Don’t overdo physical exer
tion, whether at work or at
play.
The more relaxed outdoor
life of the summer months
has many advantages to
compensate for the heat.
Stay relaxed and use
common sense and you can
beat the heat—at least
somewhat.

noting "This area is patrolled
by a tarantula." Break-ins

The Carmichael Buggy Company In Jackson,
operated by three brothers (J. 8., J.R., and A.H.),
was a leading buggy manufacturer in the late 19th
century, producing what was then the utmost in
elegant transportation.
A mere (to folks nowadays, at least) 40 dollars
would purchase from the three brothers a beautiful
buggy with an ash and yellow poplar body, large,
spoked wheels, a durable canopy roof (with fringe, if
desired) plush, comfortable seats (front and back
ones), and a side-mounted lantern.

Though they were considered a revolutionary
marvel in their day (with gears and wheels formed
of hickory wood), the Carmichael Brothers’ buggies
were soon retired to rot in bams and fields across
the nation as a fellow named Henry Ford began
tinkering with mass production and an odd
contraption later to change the world: the
automobile.

nowhere, or sets you back a fortune in repairs, or
entraps you in endless, unmoving traffic, or runs out

You know when you need to move

of the first things you should establish

One word of caution, however. All

of gas, or simply bums too much of the expensive
fuel, imagine yourself back in the horse and buggy
era, gliding along the red clay roads of Georgia; the
scent of honeysuckle fills the air, and your view is
one of peach trees and com fields and cows in the

It’s a nice feeling alright, but the guy in the car

honking his horn off the steering wheel if you play
make-believe for too long, transporting you back to
reality.
