Impromptu Composition
Written by SKCiss Scarboro in the

‘Recent High Schools’
Contest.
None of the contestant- knew the
subject until announced at the lime
of writing: there was no possible
chance to avoid originality, nor did
the judge know the name of the
school nor writer, and could only
announce his decision by the letter
“E” by which the paper was desig
nated. The writer of composition
“E” proved to lie Miss Effie Scar

Cordele, against live contestants

lady Macbeth’s influence over
HER HUSBAN'ND. -
A noble character, noble in po
tentiality and fruition, domineered
over by a superior intellect and will,
may Is* forced to perpetrate deeds
entirely foreign to his nature.
In Duly Macbeth’s influence over
her husband, an example of this
fact is found. Although many prin
ciples necessary to the character of
a man who wishes to ‘'do good and
not evil all the days of his life are
lacking in Macbeth, yet he would
surely have been a better man, a
nobler soldier, a truer friend, had
he chosen for a life-partner a differ
ent woman.
However, Mneltotb's character is
not a character to stand alone. He
must necessarily follow. Lady Mac
beth {jossesses a stronger will, a sup
erior intellect, a startling power of
self-control. Fit, indeed, is she to
lead. She can plan, scheme, plot
and drive Macbeth on to do those
things which are the childien of her
brain.
As a woman, Lady Macbeth’s in
fluence is magnetic, powerful. What
man is there especially a brave sold
ier, who can bear the taunts of the
woman he loves? Love certainly
existed between this pair, strange
as it may seem. Lady Macbeth’s
care and tenderness, her desperate
speeches, her desire to shield from
detection her husband during the
banquet, show that as a'wife her in
fluence was powerful. For, driven
from his awful hallucination by her,
he becomes a “man” again.
Although her influence is the
means of Macbeth’s downfall, yet,
we cannot doubt that Lady Macbeth j
urges him on to crime and goaf’s I
him on to murder in the desire that j
he may possess the utmost fruit of
his ambition. Her sharp speeches j
are only goads to drive him to what j
she believes best for him. They
come not from a callous nature, but
from a steeled will. Her action is
like pushing a boulder over a pre
cipice; after that one impulse no
thing can stay it, and it gathers im
petus as it goes.
Before the end of her life, how
ever, Lady Macbeth’s influenceover
her husband,having gradually grown
weaker and weaker, ceases. At her
death Macbeth is scarcely moved:
he seems to look upon it as simply
another incident in the meaningless,
weary tale of human life.
A feeling of sorrow, of regret, a
desire that it might have been other
wise, Alls us as we view their awful
downfall, their dreadful retribution.
But in their punishment we see ful
tilled the prophecy of Isaiah. 4 4 Woe
unto them that put darkness for
light and light for darkness, that
call evil good and good evil, that
put bitter for sweet and sweet for
bitter.”

His Money inVour Ginnery 1
A grower believes in hit ginner, just the same as a pinner believes in the
men with whom he does business. A ginner does not purposely fail to
give his customers, the growers, the service they ought to get.
There is another side. No ginner can afford to put in any but a
Munger System

more work and with less power. All Continental machinery is built from
