He Malles Some ‘Pertinent and
Interesting Comments in Re
ference to the Forma
tion of the Proposed
New County.
Anent the proposition of divid
ing Pulaski County and making two
counties which is agitating the
eastern half of the county just now,
we wish to assure our friends of
Hawkinsville and the western half
of the county that this movement
is not prompted by any motives of
envy, jealousy or bitterness. A
very large percent of the voters and
citizens of this section are to the
manor horn and cherish the deep
est reverence for old Pulaski. This
feeling has restrained any movement
on this line for years hut in the
progressive development of the
times, increase of population and
increased burdens of citizenship
and multiplied litigation following
as a natural consequence,—it is in
evitable that all of our larger coun
ties will in a few years be reduced
in size by the formation of new
counties.
Commercial relations are not Sev
ern! by county lines. Mutual re
lations and benefits influenced by
distance and accessibility determine
these questions. The agricultural
interests alone does not make prosp
erous and popular cities though they
sustain them; hut if Hawkinsville
and Cochran would grow in popula
tion and commercial importance
they must foster and develop the
manufacturing interests.
I am sure no section or county in
our state possesses more natural ad
vantages for agricultural develop
ment than Pulaski County, and if
we divide the county and thus put
two strong forces to work in this de
velopment thd progress will lie
much more rapid than if the work
is left to one organization as at
present.
A glance at the map of Pulaski
County which is acceptable to any
who wishes information will observe
the ill shape and inconvenient lay
of the county. It is about 45 miles
long and from 15 to 20 miles wide.
Very many of our good citizens in
the eastern half of the county live
so remotely from Hawkinsville that
they could not go from their homes
to the court house and return the
same day. This is a very heavy
burden on those citizens when called
upon to do jury duty and witness
duty in the courts.
Indeed it is such -a burden and
the menace to the well-being of a
juror’s family is such that lie will
not take the hazard, and he finds
some way to evade the law, thus
forfeiting the high privilege and du
ty of the citizen, and the county
losing his services as a juror.
Pulaski County has 477 square
miles,, 1270 lots and 219 fractional
lots of land. To divide the county
on a line, with Mobley’s Crossing
wo n ld give the old county about 725
lots and the new county about GOO
lots, approximately 250 square miles
for Pulaski and 225 square miles
for the new county. I have been
informed that there are 44 counties
in the state with less area and popu
lation than these counties would
contain.
It is confidently believed that the
present census will give us a popu
pulation of twenty-five to thirty
thousand inhabitants which would
give to each county twelve to fiifteen
thousand.
A very pertinent and practical
question naturally suggests itself.
Are there any practical benefits
to he derived except the personal
convenience of the individual citizen
by this division of the county? We
sincerely believe that great material
progress and development will re-1

Every detail and resource of a ne
cessity will be more closely guarded
and fostered. The best and most
economical methods will be adopted
in public affairs. Public roads and
highways will be opened up for the
development of isolated communi
ties, and above all, we can more
easily bring the educational and law
and order influences to bear more
directly and impressively on every
community and individual, elevat
ing ideals and standards, morals,
learning and religion.
Handsome well-kept public build
ings arouse civic pride and taste
and the farmer will catch the inspir
ation and enthusiasm, and will go
to his home to make it more beauti
ful and attractive. Once started on
this line, peace, contentment and
prosperity as surely follows as day
follows night.
I predict each of the counties
