Corn Club
The l.h ekley County Corn Club
has lieon organized witn a member
ship of (ifly-two.
Any one else desiring to join the
club will please give in their names
to I)r. John It. Peacock. No doubt
in the world of the great lienefit to
lie derived in the co-operation of
these clubs among the members.
There has lieen a wonderful increase
in the average yield of corn in this
county since the organization of the
first corn club only two years ago.
Both the Southern Railway and the
United States government are send
ing <ut agricultural experts to co
operate; with the farmers free of
charge. This work is a part of the
agricultural branch of the govern
ment, and the Southern Railway is
engaged in this work in order to
develop*' the country along its line,
and at the same time the lienefit to
lie derived will lie mutual. Our
farmers who are diversifying and
paying .itteiition to intensive culti
vation aie tht; most successful.

DEATI I OF MRS.
LAURA DUNHAM
Mrs Laura Dunham, wife of Mr.
T. J. Dunham. Deputy Sheriff of
Chatham county, died in Savannah
at ton j) in. March 4th. Her re
mains were brought to our city
Wednesday, March sth, and carried
to the residence of her brother Dr.
T. D. walker, Sr. Funeral services
were conducted at the Methodist
Church at ten o’clock A. M. Thurs
day and the laxly was interred in
in weeping Pine cemetery at eleven
a. m.
Mrs. Dunhan was fifty-seven
years old when she died. She was
known to the older residents of this
county as Miss Laura walker and
was reared on Longstreet, being a
sister of Dr. T. D. walker and IX
C. walker of our city. She was one
of the first teachers in New Ebene
aer college. Having taught in this
school when she was a young lady
some thirty odd years ago.
Mrs. Dunham was, a Christian
lady, being a life long member of
tbe Methodist church. She was a
very fine character, intellectual and
attractive, and possessed all of those
lovely traits of character that we
like to attribute to our Southern
womanhood.
Mrs. Dunham is survived by her
husband, T. J. Dunham, of Savan
nah, and three brothers: T. D.
Walker, Sr. and D. C. Walker of
our city and J C Walker, of Pulaski.
Those attending the funeral our
side the city were: Miss Mollie
Mason, of Macon, Mrs. J. J. Den
nard, of Pineview, Mrs. Ida Murray,
of Lumber City, and T. J. Dunham,
of Savannah.

SMITH SCHOOL ITEMS

school house last Friday Fell. 28th

bringing fair prices under the able
management of Mr. will Floyd as
auctioneer Miss Myitle Pipkin’s
box was the highest sold, which
brought $7.00, and was bought by
Mr. Carter, of Bailey’s Park. An
interesting feature of the evening
was a fish pond provided for the
children. A box of candy for the
most popular young lady of the
community was awarded to Miss
Annie D. Lancaster. The proceeds
of the evening amounted to $.50.90
which is to lie used for the lienefit
of the school.
Our school is still progressing mi
ller management of Miss Annie 1).
Lancaster and Miss Bertie Fleming
as teachers. The daily attendance
continues very good. Only a few
of the larger pupils have stopj>e<l
on account of farm work. It is the
earnest desire of the teachers to
have the school come up to all the
requirements, and there by pass as
a standard County bcliool.

accompanied by her charming little
daughter, Thelma and Katherine
McGlockin, spent Saturday at Mr.
Mack Long’s.
The school at this place is still
progressing nicely under the skillful
management of our efficient teach
ers, Misses Jessup and Purser. We
wish to commend the deportment
of the school as a whole. The chil
dren are learning intelligent self
control.
