“Water Is Cheaper
Than Coffins”
The common adversaries of fle-h
and health, whether of man or beast,
viz: germs, inicml* or bacteria,
like tlie ptxjr, suffering humanity
has had with them ever since mar.
made his appearance on the globe.
That the Allwise Providence had
reason for making them nobody need
doubt. That these bacteria or
germs in the minimum may l»e
harmless, hut in the maximum
numbers l>e detrimental and destuc
tive to health and body, is a fore
gone conclusion.
Now, where are these invisible
armies of physical adversaries pro
pagated and raised? Fortunately
we do not have to go far to dis
cover their pathogenic camps.
'Phase camps are in the backyards,
outhouses, barnyards, alleys,
ditches, stagnant ponds, sewers and
dusly streets, crowded public houses
churches, schools and many other
places.
If is not in the province of this pa
per to enlarge and dwell in minutia
upon all these breeding camps. For
the present we have in view only
the dusty streets.
Had Providence endowed us with
keen microscopic vision, we would
long since have left our placid dom
icile for regions beyond, alarmed
and panic strickened. It was not
best for us to have seen anything.
But what is dust on the streets,
or what harm will it do? The dust
on the streets is a compound of or
ganic and inorganic matter, a com
pound of infinitely pulverized dirt
and decomposed animal and vege
table matter, such as wood, weeds,
and the daily drippings of animals.
Of this deleterious mixture we daily
partake in goodly doses, consciously
or unconsciously, and cairy same
into our nostrils and lungs. Do
you see the point? Should a lone
individual, vile enough, have at
tempted to administer to 11s, a dose
of a. compound equally as deadly,
we would have hanged him higher
than Hainan.
Now, Ladies and Gentlemen and
citizens, you arc the only impartial
judges. Each one of you can judge
independently, individually and
collectively, and your verdict will
he unanimous and one: “The en
tire banishment, as far as practica
ble, of that highly respectable but
disease disseminating and death
dealing dose. ’ ’
The means of dealing with dust
is very simple: pave, macademize
or sprinkle the streets, if paving
or maeademizing is impossible be
cause of financial reasons, then take
the simple way, the sprinkling.
Sprinkle your s.reets. It takes
water, a sprinkler, a public spirited
city council with the co-operation
of the citizens to do the woik. We
have the water —we need a sprink
ler. It is an absolute necessity.
We must have it. ‘Water is
cheaper than collins,” was ihe
sentence uttered by the emi
nent specialist. Dr. Chew, of Balti
more, twenty-years ago. It seemed
just as fresh today as it did then.
Let us keep the deadly dust off our
streets, nostrils, lungs, counters,
merchandise and homes. Shall we
all cry aloud: “Down with the
dust.”
