To Baptist Churches In
Bleckley And Pulaski
Christmas times are about here,
and we shall be remembering our
various friends and loved ones with
gifts of more or less value. It is a
good time for us v to remember the
words of the Master, who said:
“When thou makest a dinner or
supper call not thy friends, nor thy
brethren, nor thy rich neighbors:
lest haply they also bid thee again,
and a recompense be made thee.
But when thou makest a feast, bid
the poor, the mained, the lame the
blind: and thou shalt be blessed ‘
because they have not wherewith to
recompense thee; for.thou shalt be
recompensed in the resurrection of
the just.”
Now the Master probably did not
mean that we are not to ever invite
our friends to feasts, but rather that
we are to expect no heavenly rec
ompense for doing it. On tl e
other hand, whenever we give those
who are not able to help themselves
or to pay us back again, God keeps
the account and becomes our pay
master.
One suggestion for these Christ
mas times is that we remember the
widows and orpliE ns in our several
communities. See that there are
no empty stockings nor bare pan
tries. Let us all be able to make
the boast of Job, “I have not eaten
my bread alone,”
Moreover as Churches affiliated
with the Georgia Baptist Conven
tion, we must remember that at
the Georgia Baptist Orphan’s
Home, at Hapeville, we have 250 or
more children who are the wards of
our denomination. The home has
been forced to go into debt for cur
rent expenses during the last few
months, and now the time to settle
has come. This letter is by way of
suggestion to you that individuals
and churches of our association will
give Christmas gifts to the Orphans’
Home. It is easy to raise money
for the orphans. Old “tight
wads”, who gives nothing to any
thing else, will listen and respond
to the cry of the orphan, l*ecause
even misers have hearts down un
der their jackets if we can only get
to them. All that is needed in any
church or community is for some
consecrated man or women to take
the matter up and raise a collection
for the orphans. Who will be the
one to undertake it in your
church? Shall it be you.
A barrell or two of syrup from
some well to do farmer would help
to sweeten the orphan’s lot.
Supplies should be send to The
Georgia Baptist Orphans’ Home,'
Hapeville, Ga. Money should be
sent to Dr. J. J. Benneet, Chandler
Building, Atlanta, Ga. Be sure to
keep a list of values so as to enter
it upon your church letter next fall.
Yours truly,
Chas. L. Greaves,
Corresponding Sec. Pulaski Asso.
Cold Storage Plant
For Cochran
Now is the time to begin to think
about a cold storage plant for Coch
ran and Bleckley County. For a
nominal sum a plant can be erected
that will save our meat? Last year
alone the farmers of this county lost
enough meat to more than pay for
a cold storage plant. With a little
effort and enterprise, we beleive a
stock company could soon be form
ed for this purpose, and at the
same time they could have in view
the building of an ice plant in con
nection with the cold storage plant.
Some of our most progressive far
mers are making arrangements to
fight the cattle ticks. They are al
so preparing to innoculate their hogs
to prevent hog cholera. This is all
very encouraging. It means more
meat will be raised in Bleckley
County and it is absolutely neces
sary that arrangements be made to
take care of this meat. Lets have
& cold storage plant.
The Great Clean
Sweep Sale
Wednesday, Dec. 10th, the open
ing daj of the great Clean Sweep
Saleof J. J. at enen
dous success. We doubt if there
has ever been a greater trading day
in the history of Cochran, barring
perhaps Christmas eve. The city
was-simply running over with peo
ple and the trading was general all
over town. Every merchant here
reports a splendid trade.
From the minute the doors of the
store of J.J. Taylor were opened the
house was crowded and jammed al
most up to the time of its close.
People came here from the territory
of Dublin. Dexter, Chester, Jeffer
sonville, Danville, Empire, Hawk
insville and Eastman and no doubt
in the world that this great sale
will draw people that would have
gone to Macon.
This sale was a benefit to every
business interest in this city. It
drew and will continue to draw
great crowds that would have
sought for bargains at other places.
There is no senMment in business.
The people are going where they
can get fhe goods and the prices.
If inducements to trade are not of
fered in Cochran the people will go
to the other places to get them.
No mistake about that. The policy
of the up-to-date city and the en
terprising merchant is to keep in
the public eye and draw the people
to their places of business.
Straight forward legitimate adver
tising will draw the crowd and
when the crowd comes the mer
chant has an opportunity to sell.
Is it not a fact that if there was
some concentrated effort to keep the
public eye on this town and some
constant inducement to encourage
people to come here instead of leav
ing our territory that it would be
beneficial to all business interests?
Why are people coming here from
outside territory? Because great
bargains by an old reliable mer
chant were offered and the people
Were reached by ten thousand cir
culars and two full page ads in the
Cochran lournal telling them about
it.
A Unique Plan
of Advertising
We desire to call special attention
to the advertisement of Walker’s
Pharmacy in this issue of the Coch
ran Journal.
From now until Dec 24th, they
will give six months subscription to
the Cochran Journal to all who
spend $5.00 in cash with them.
This is absolutely a voluntary
offer that we knew nothing about
until we saw it in the advertise
ment. We feel very much gratified
that this enterprising and loyal firm
thinks enough of their home paper
to voluntary offer it as a prize to
their customers. We of course
wish them much success and will
appreciate any aditicnal subscrip
tion we may secure in this way, but
far above the additional subscrip
tion we appreciate the fact that one
of our merchants was loyal to his
home paper and valued it high
enough to offer it as aa inducement
to early Xmas purchasers.
