’RAH FOR BRANTLEY, ANYHOW!
THE ItKSIT/T or Til 10 1 tljl-M'TIOX.
Tlio Savannah Morning News, on
the morning after the election, says
in an editorial that the free silver coin
age is a dead issue, and that it will
never he resurrected. Now, while the
Brorzc has never hclieyed that the
free and unlimited coinage of silver
was the remedy for our financial ills,
yet it is apparent that there is some
thing wrong somewhere, and if the
rnaintainaneo of the gold standard for
four years more does not settle matters
and bring prosperity to our country
free silver or some other radical meas
ure will he tried. <
McKinley’s election simply means
that the gold standard is to bo given
a trial for four years more.
The Breeze trusts that the election
of McKinley will stop the trailieing
in gold and restore confidence in the
money centers. This, we believe, will,
in a large measure, bring prosperity
to every class of our people.
“When Benny gets to Congress and
the boom begins to boom.”
Top of the marning to yez, Con
gressman Brantley.
Atkinson nixl the I rat ion.
The outpouring at Governor Atkin
son’s inauguration was the greatest
seen in the state in years. Thousands
of visitors crowded into the city and
the military pageant brought togeth
er in line more of the state malita
than has ever before participated in a
parade at the same time.
The ovation received by Governor
Atkinson lias given his senatorial
boom a tremendous boost. The cen
tral idea throughout the whole dem
onstration seemed to be the effect of
it upon the senatorial situation. The
other candidates are dumbfounded.
Evan Howell, Atkinson’s bitterest op
ponent, is like the boy the calf ran
over.
The great display in honor of his in
auguration has appearantdy complete
ly demoralized all the candidates, and
it will take all the time between
•'r'aturday and the day of the election
for them to rally.
Under the circumstances the Breeze
can take no decided stand in this
campaign. But between Atkinson
and Howell, give us Atkinson every
time.
i’ e Breeze cannot endorse the at
tack made on Capt, Ben Milikin, by
certain democratic newspapers, for)
using a pass on the railroads. He
pays for all the riding he does, and
we say the attack was ill advised.

HAUNTED BY A RAT.
\
The Ghostly Rodent Scared All the Other
Hats atii Mice Away.
“I learned something new about
ghosts and haunted houses the last
time 1 was down east,” said the
newly arrived traveling man to the
group of friends gathered round
him.
“Years ago this house I speak of
was occupied by a family of three.
First thuro was the father, a moody
man of about 50 years, who could
see no pleasure in life since his will
had died. Ho had a pretty daughter,
who felt the restraint put upon her
by the stern father. The third mem*
her of tho family was an old serv
ant, who had boon so long employed
in tho house that she thought she
was boss of everything, including
the girl.
j “The young girl fell in love with
! a handsome young fellow in her fa
| thor’s employ. The old man was en
! gaged in the East India trade. He
| often sont the lad to the house on er-
I rands, with tho result that lie and
j the girl got well acquainted. The old
j servant, with eyes and ears always
j open, soon suspected something was
i in the wind, and finally she manag
ed to find out that the two thought
a great deal of each other. She went
with great elation to the father and
told him what she had learned. That
was the end of the happy days of tho
young couple. A couple of days aft
er tlio young clerk was sent down to
the harbor to deliver papers to tho
skipper of a vessel which was lying
in wait for favorable wind and tide.
He was enticed below hatches and
kept there for awhile. His bitte p
protests were of no avail. The cap
tain had receive,! tlio orders i'roifi
liis omployer, and ho curried then*
out. By the time tho young fellow
was allowed to go on deck the ship
was out of sight of land, bound for
tlio west coast of Africa. The young
girl ran away from home and was
never seen again in those parts. As
for tho young man, he died soon aft
er the vessel touched tho African
shore.
“But to return to my story. The
old man gave up business and lived
tho lifo of a recluse. Ho brooded
over liia troubles till he grow to boa
skeleton. One day tlio old servant
found her master lying dead on the
floor of his daughter’s room. Tho
blood had ceased flowing from the
terrible wound in bis neck, caused
by the razor still clutched in his
stiffened fingers. Trio old servant
told tlio story afterward, that while
she gazed in horror she saw some
thing of a light, airy nature begin
to take form upon the dead man’s
breast. As slio stared thoro she saw
it take the semblance of a big gray
rat. Those she told tlio story to look,
ed upon it as simply tlio croaking of
an aged imbecile. But thoro were
who changed their minds
’shortly afterward, for tlio watchers
by the body claimed that they saw
the specter of a gray rat hopping
about upon the lid of tlio coffin. Un
fortunately tlio rat did not go with
tho coffin. If it had, that houso
might ho a pleasant home for soiiig
ono now. But tlio ghost rat some
how or other camo to tlio conclusion
that it would ho a good thing to
stay, and it did- So tho house is va
cant now. Many different families
have occupied it since tho old man
killed himself, hut tho rat proved
too muoli for all of them. It was an
impossibility to got rid of tlio ghost
ly intruder. Neither dogs nor cats
cared to run up against if. Tho best
ratters that could be obtained wove
afraid of it and always kept at a re
speotable distance. Sticks, stones,
| flatirons, hammers, axes, hatchets,
stovo covers and various oilier handy
articles wore tsont jn tho direction of
tho creature. Oftentimes they would
soem to hit tlio mark, but the rat
would keep moving leisurely along
ns if nothing had happened. At first
new tenants would rather enjoy the
sport, but it got too monotonous and
creepy after awhile, and the invaria
ble end of it all in each case was that
tho family would move out.'
“There was but ono redeeming
feature to his rntship —all other rats
and mice kept out of sight- Thera
were many of both in tlio house un
til tho old man died, but they were
never soon afterward. ” —Buffalo Ex
