ROTATION 'SYSTEM.
To-*l*v in to decide whether the rotn
tion nyntern is to he continued in this Sen
atorial District, or whether it is to he
nhnndoned. We have no idea how it will
he determined, hut whatever may the ex
pressed will of the people on the question
we shall heartily acquiesce. Both the con
testants are gentlemen of probity, and are
so far as wo know good Democrats.
Whichever is elected, we feel sure will do
his duty to his constituents so far as lies
in his power. While we believe the rota
tion plan to he a good one—one that in
sures a fair representation to every county,
yet it is for the peoplo to decide as to wheth
er itji'kall continue or not, and no man has
aright aftc. such questions have boon left
to the fair arbitration of tho ballot box to
demur. We hope that the bickerings and
animosities engendered by every heated
contest will subside, and that every man
in our good old District will accept grace
fully the result, and aid our Senator, who
ever he may be, in every way that they
can to do his duty, l.et not the Demo
crats he divided among themselves, for it
is highly important that we stand closely
together, ever rendy to meet the common
foe whenever he presents himself. We be
- organization to he necessary to the
weal of every pat ty, and as the mission ol
the Democratic party is not yet fully ac
complished, let us he careful not to be
come too lax in our unity, w herein lies our
strength.
Strange Dream.
Dear StiN : 1 arise to explain—no, to
apologize. lam sorry that 1 caused some
of your pious (?) readers pain in my letter,
which w as written, perhaps, through some
strange hallucination or in a state of som
nambulism. 1 awake to liiul that '‘morality''
takes me to task ! He is a strange fellow,
if he is as much shocked as lie pretends,
lie should have signed his name piety, sanc
tity, oral least have taken some xfroiigci'
name than “morality,” We are told that
he who depends solely upon his morals
“ hangs upon n brittle thread'’ mid has no
hope. I would tell where such characters
ultimately land, hut I do not want to cause
another convulsion in this community by
using such language as h—l (excuse me).
Perhaps “ morality” has never read any
Other Bible than Rev. Rodolphus Dicken
son’s, which w e arc told lias not the word
hell within its lids, i was raised up under
King James’ translation, and I now use the
same in my family devotions (1 do not say
it boast ingly for 1 know 1 conic far short of
tny whole duty), and 1 try to impress upon
my children the importance of living so as
to avoid that horrible place. Would “ mor
ality” have me speak in mild terms of hell
or forbear speaking of it at alii 1 It is made
our duty to do all in our power against the
Devil, and how can we do it better than by
showing the terrible punishments he in
dicts upon his followers? I speak conscien
tiously when I sny no tacriligt was in
tended in my letter and I refer “ moral
ity,” and all other grumbler’s to Webster’s
unabridged Dictionary for the definition of
any word in my letter that seemed to them
to be sacriligious. It is impossible to please
everybody, and 1 did not expect that.
“When the saddle pinches the horse
flinches." I have as high reverence for the
Supreme Being as any of the coinplailiers
yet heard from : hut 1 confess that I have
no respect for the Devil nor desire that any
of my people should become residents of
hell. How an honest and religious man
can, take exceptions to my letter, is, in
deed, a mystery.
Take another view of niv letter, dear of
fended render, and is it not rather a w ant
ing or reproof to those who are living dis
honestly ? Does it not portray the awful
consequences of such a course of conduct!'
Such was the intention of the writer ere
his thoughts were expressed—to do good
and not evil. 1 hold that if anything can
he said for the improvement of the honesty
of the people, that it ought to bo said. Our
excuse for publishing our first letter can
not he better rendered than by using John
Bunyan's excuse for printing “Pilgrim's
Progress, via :
" Well, when 1 had thus put my ends
together.
I showed them others, that I might see
whether
They would condemn them, or them jus
tify :
And sonic said, Let them live: some, Let
them die ;
Some said, friend, print it: others said.
Not so ;
Some said. It might do good ; others said.
No.
Now was I in a strait, and did not see
Which was the best thing to be done by
me:
At last I thought. Since you are thus di
vided.
I print it will, and so the case decided.
♦*♦*** % * *
Forbear to judge 'ill you do further see.
If that you wilt not read let italonc;
Koine love the meat, some love to pick the
bone.
\eii, that I might them better moderate.
\ did too with them thus expostulate:—
May I not write in such a style as this?
In such a method, too. and vet not miss
My end—thy good? Why may it not he
done?
Park clouds bring waters, when the bright
tiring none.”
Your hopeful (not lost) friend,
Dick.
