“Talking with the Hark On.”
if *A< Toetoa AV'.
Messrs. Editors! I sec frotn ft circti-
Ur sent out by John F. Troutman. Chair
man Senate Committee on Agriculture, and
L F Livingston, Chairman House Com
mittee on Agrictlltuie. that inasmuch ns
a bill was introduced in the Legislature,
ami postponed until the next July session,
was introduced to abolish the department
of Agriculture, they desire that “ a decided
expression of opinion on the part of the
intelligent citizens of the State bo had be
fore that time.”
1 am an old and humble citizen, to the
manor borh in Georgia, though not so very
intelligent, still I desire to publish through
your valuable paper my utter disapproba
tion and opposition to a continuance of the
Agricultural Department as well as other
expensive and useless departments, (loo
logical and others I might montion. I con
sider them a nuisance to the State and a
heavy burden to the tax-payers, w itliont
profit or hope thereof, for every farmer and
miner in (leorgia farms and mines in his
own way and under his own experience,
without regard to the expensive and mass
of printed matter by individuals who nev
er raised a bushel of corn, a pound of cot
ton, or mined a day with their own physi
cal labor, vet they profess to teach you ev
erythin" about farming and mining. I nev
er could, as a farmer, profit by their les
sons.
Times, 1 know, have changed, as every
thing else will, but the great burden of tax
ation. under which the citizens of (leorgia
now labor, ami under which they seem
destined to continue to labor for an indefi
nate time, is clearly, in my opinion, charge
able to the faults of our politicians, repre
sentatives and law-makers. They are, as
a general thing, utterly inconsistent in their
acts and professions, and entirely too prod
igal to be trusted with the power, if it
could be avoided, to tax the citizens for any
purpose.
They generally set out in their argument
by harping upon the distress and impover
ishment of the people from the effects of
the late war. yet they raise, without stint,
the tax on the citizens, salaries of officers,
create new offices, expensive and useless
bureaus and departments in the State, and
everything else in proportion, seemingly
for an excuse to levy the tax a little higher
and higher, as though we were full of
wealth and money.
In 1851. when the lamented lion. Ilowell
Cobb was elected Governor of Georgia,
the first year that the advalorum system
of taxation was adopted in Georgia,* the
State then only desired $350,000. which
run the State Government at that time for
one year. Now what does it take? Over
one million of dollars per annum. And
yet nearly every speaker in the conventions
and Legislature sets out with the remark
that " we arc so much impoverished by the
late war that we are unable to pay our
debts or anything else.” All this shows
to inc that there •* is something rotten in
Denmark.”
T admit that we have some talented and
worthy gentlemen in the Legislature who
would correct many errors m our State
policy if they could. Hut their numbers
are so few that they arc utterly powerless
to make such corrections.
Hence, Messrs. Editors, my reasons for
asking a publication of this communica
tion, first, because we are desired to ex
press a decided opinion in relation to the
abolisiun nt of the Agr cultural Depart
ment. Secondly, 1 desire to show that
not every citizen in this section is in favor
of that Department, and thirdly. 1 hope
this course will start up a general expres
sion of opinion in this section in relation to
the question under consideration.
An Old Link Democrat.
AV c are pleased to see the communication
of “Old Line Democrat.” Mis arguments,
are as solid as one of the lofty mountains
of his county, and we have no doubt, if the
fact could be ascertained, that nineteen
twentieths of the real farmers and miners
of the State are of his opinion. The Ilogo
cornological. Rockology, Doctorology. and
and all such useless concerns, made for the
purpose of giving fat offices to the sweet
scented, kid-gloved fellows of the cities,
should be abolished. AVe once heard an
argument between an illiterate farmer and
a gentleman who had been editing an agri
cultural paper for twenty years, on the
subject of taking fodder from corn. The
editor contended that the increased weight
of the corn would more than pay for the
loss of the fodder, and said to the fanner,
“AA’hy did God put the fodder on the
stalk ?” The farmer replied : “To pull
otf, the same as the ear of corn.”

A physician, complaining bitterly about
hard times, went to his druggist to find out
the reason why, at this season of the year,
his practice was not so extensive as former
ly ; also to find out what inducements his
brother medico olfered to attract away his
patients. lie was startled when his drug
gist answered as follows : " Doctor, coughs
and colds are very prevalent, but every one
is purchasing Hale's Honey of llore
iioi'ND and Tar, and recovers so rapidly
that there is no necessity for calling in a
physician. Again, the reason Dr. P„ on
th,street, is having so many patients is
owing to the frankness he adopted in pre
scribing in every case of Cos g'is. Colds,
etc., a bottle of Hales Money of Hoee
iiound and Tar. and finding it success
ful. he has concluded in future that all his
patients, when troubled with any disease
of the lungs, shall immediately commence
taking Male's Honey of llorehound
and Tar.”
The druggist's advice was snapped, and
the almost discouraged physician now is
considered a successful practitioner, llis
claims are based upon the virtues of the
medicine he adopts, which in all cases is
Half's honey of llorehoun and and Tar.

cure the croup instantly.

On Monday afternoon John Tompkins
and Hen Carpenter, two colored men, were
down in Willisßowsey's well preparing to
blast the rock out, when in some unknown
way the powder ignited, bursting the rock
and throwing the two men violently against
the walls. Roth of the men were terribly
burned in the face and otherwise cut and
bruised. I)rs. Eberhart and Webb were
immediately summoned, and did their ut
most to alleviate the poor sufferers’ agony.
They had to amputate Tompkm's left hand
at the wrist, and sewed up a frightful gash
on Carpenter’s arm. The men can see a

Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery has re

loud they advertise, success depends upon
merit. In South America, as well as in

purifying the system. It speedily allays

The thriving little city of Bowersville
seems determined to keep up with the times
in every respect. Quite a bustle of excite
ment was caused there on last Thursday
by a sanguinary Contliet between William
Dooly, Revenue Marshal, of Hartwell, and
Col. Ira Lombard of that city. It appears
that some ill-feeling had boon existing be
tween these parties for some time, which
culminated in the extravagant burning of
powder at the time aforesaid. The diffi
culty occurred in Benson & Co.’s store.
Marshal Dooly opened the ball by hitting
Col. Lombard a few blows with a stick,
after which both parties drew their pistols
and exchanged shots. Happily neither one
was struck ; though the spectators evi
dently thought there was danger in the air
and immediately prepared to “ sniff the
battle from afar off,” and were not very
particular as to how they accomplished
this desired end, as, like the auctioneer's
cry, they “run out—-jumpedout —tumbled
out —any way, so they got out." The ball
from Marshal Dooly’s revolver struck the
fire-board, glanced and perforated a neat
little hole through the window glass, while
Col. Lombard's projectile hit the door
facing where Marshal Dooly had been
standing just a second before. Here the
battle ended, nnd quiet again reigned su
preme in Warsaw. It is said that when
the frightened engine drew up to the depot
it turned pale, dogded behind a guano sack,
snorted with fear, and the intrepid engi
neer had to pat it gently on the tender be
hind him to get it to stand long enough to
unload freight. All that Bowersville now
needs to make it a first-class city is a few
cases of yellow fever, two or three police
men, a bloated bondholder, a notod detec
tive and a grave robber}'.
P. S. —A revolver factory is also a stern
necessity—with globe sights.

A Handsome Income For An
ENERGETIC I.AItY OK GEXTLCnA*.
The Ohio Scale Works of Cincinnati have
just completed and are now introducing to
the public a Handsomely finished Family
Scale, an article that has always been need
ed in every household, and in a communi
cation addressed to the publishers of this
paper the proprietors ask us to refer.them
to sonic reliable party, to introduce it for
them to the people of this comity. It is
very seldom that anew article steps so
suddenly into universal favor. House
keepers arc loud in its praise, it is always,
ready, there are no weights to get lost or
hunted up, is reliable, and will not get out
of order. The description of them is a
handsome base surmounted by a column
in which works a spiral spring so scientific
ally adjusted as to weigh anything up
to twelve pounds with perfect accuracy,
on the top of the column is the platform
on which the articles to be weighed are
placed, and they have an adjustable indi
cator so that you can take the tare of any
vessel you may use in weighing, giving you
the exact net weight. Housekeepers at
once see their value in weighing fruits, su
gars and other ingredients used in preserv
ing. cooking, etc., or in testing the weights
of purchases from others.
The Scales are made of all Brass, are
highly polished and are finished in a skill
ful manner. They are very attractive and.
take the eye of every one who sees them.
It seems to us that nearly every family
in this county will want one, and is cer
tainly a rare opportunity for some smart
and energetic party to pick up quite a nice
little income during the next few months.
The Company has agents in other counties
who are easily making from $5.00 to $6.00
per day selling them, and we would recom
mend parties in need of employment to
drop the OHIO SCALE WORKS. No. 125
and 127 Central Avenue, Cincinnati, 0., a

be cheerfully given them by mentioning our

this depot will receive more freight this
month than all—yes all—the depots on the
