TUOtOftTS FOR APRIL.
It is presumed that the most of the
upland and part of the* bottom crop of
corn Inis been planted ; and we would
now warn you of the danger of leaving
a too thick stand. From observation,
wc think a great many farmers leave
th*ir corn too thick, nnd their cotton,
particularly on poor land, too thin, j
(torn rows five feet apart and four feet in
the drill, with one stalk in a hill, would !
give atmi'dliing oyer 2,000 Ftnlks,to the
acre; bud each stalk to pro
duce fine car, mu! lOn cars to make a
bushel, the yield would he over twenty
bushels, which is pretty good for good
bottom land. Ordinary upland will
produce about 10 to lo bu-hels per
acre, and to do tins, the rows should he
from five to six feet In width and the
corn thinned to four or five feet itt 'lie i
drill. We have seen some upland fields
capable of produeing about eight or
ten bushds to the acre have on them
five to six thousand hills of corn, w hich,
if each stalk had produced a good ear,
would have yielded 50 to (50 bushels per
acre, hut, unfortunately to these farmers,
the effect of such crowding is to dimin
ish the natural yield and what is made
is of very poor quality.
cmrv.s
have recently been iutroduc <1 in this
part of the country, and is believed t>
Ik; a very important nid crop. 11. E.
Xadler planted an acre hißt year, and is |
wonderfully pleased with them —thinks
the acre paid him better, in the wav ol i
fattening hogs, than any two acres of his
best bottom lands.
ror CORN.
On t experience corroborates that of Mr.
MaGee given in last week's Sl'N, in re
gard to this crop. It is remarkable how
thickly it will grow and mature its crop.
Our experience with it is not sufficient
to recommend it ns a forage or ‘‘fodder
corn" crop, yet it is likely that it will
ootyield the common corn sown for the
purpose, or any of the varieties of mil
let.
RK'F..
Other sections are beginning to raise
more or less of upland rice, and there is
no reason why some of our farmers
should not introduce its culture here, too.
If we all raised a little rice we would
aiot only save the cost of buying it, but
many would have it who do not choose
to make the outlay of purchasing.

AfiIiICVI.TtTRAI. MEKTING.
Meeting of the llart County Agrieul
iural Society, Ist Tuesday in April, 1879.
Ou uceount of the Hail road Meeting
extending far into the hour which, other
wise, would have been occupied by the
Meeting,/the regular order of business
was very.much abridged. There were
several important and eminently agri
cultural topics that would have been dis
cussed, had the time permitted, one cf
w hich is the “ fence question,” and w ill,
in all probability, come up at the May
session.
All questions that pertain to the farm
and the fanner’s interest should come
before this Society and he thoroughly
sifted and assayed, and if found to con
tain any “ precious ore," let the rightful
owners have them “ minted” for their
own profit. Perhaps there is much ben
efit to be derived from the law requiring
the stock to be kept confined. If there
is, can it tint l>c made apparent? It is,
to say the least of it, only liberal to in
vite free discussion anil act upon wise
conclusions.
There were several packages of im
proved cotton seed distributed—a repo.-t
to the U. S. Commissioner on domestic
animals made out —a number af agri
cultural pamphlets given out, and the
meeting adjourned.
J. F. Chart, Sec’v pro. tern.
How to Tell the Age of a House.
Everv horse has six teeth above and
below : he fore he is three years old h/
sheds his middle teeth—at three he sheds
one moreen each side of tlie central. At
four ho sheds the two corner and last of
the foreteeth. Between four and five
the horse cuts the tusks: at five will iut
his upjter tusks, at which time his mouth
will he complete. At six years the
grooves and hollows begin to fill up a lit
tle. At seven the grooves will be well
nigh filled up except the corner teeth
leaving little brown spots where the
brown hollows formerly were. Ateight
the whole of the hollows and grooves
are tilled up. At nine there is very oft
en seen a small fill to the outside corner
teeth ; the point of the tusk is worn oil'
and the part that was com uve begins to
fill up and become rounding ; the squares
of the central teeth begin to disappear,
and the guns leave them small and nar
row at the top.
