Hir. WORK AT CINCINNATI.
The very important work of selecting a
Democratic Presidential ticket is going n
this week at Cincinnati. If ever in thi
history of this country there was a neces
sity for calm, prudent ami harmonious ac
tion, that period has arrived. W ilh wis
'doui on the part of the delegates at Cin
cinnati, the campaign will to opened un
der living colors and a reasonable chance
•’Ctilered for the nominees of the Convention
becoming the next President* of the Uni
*-te4 States. Personal preferences should
<’j*t suppressed and those candidates select
ed who can carry sufficient strangth at the
North, which added to the solid South,
'will give a majority of the electoral vote.
We would gladly support Tilden, Thur
tnan, Field or Bayard, but we believe that
neither of those gentlemen possesses suffi
cient availability ns to render his nomina
tion expedient. Mr. Tilden cannot carry
New York. Mr. Thurman would he un
acceptable to Wall Street, and besides can
not possibly carry Ohio, his own State.
Judge Field’s and Mr. Hayard’s very pro
nounced State rights views would most
likely weaken them at the North, who be-
Jieve-iu the doctrine of State rights In in
its mildest form. After a full survey of
the entire situation, it would seem that
Seymour and Hendricks is a ticket which,
if the Convention at Cincinnati selects, will
sweep the country. With Seymour and
Uendrtcktt at Y\\o ra&Rlbcac\, wvs bc\‘tjvo t\ie
Democratic party would Secure both New
York and Indiana, which would be almost
equivalent to victory, as those two States
and the solid South are a majority of the
Electoral College. The purity and untarn.
ished integrity of these gentlemen would
be in flue contrast with the heroes of the
credit mobilier swindle and the custom
house abuses. Wo shall cheerfully accept
the result at Cincinnati, but the above
ticket is eur preference.

Till: STATE A M IVAK.V
The campaign is warming up over the
Stato. The three leading candidates be
sides Governor Colquitt, who is a candi
date for re-election, are Cartrell, Lester
and Hardeman. It may bo when the
Convention meets in August that the
strength of these gentlemen will be so di
vided as to render the nomination of either
impracticable or at least inexpedient. In
that event the Convention will have to
look about for a dark horse, as is becom
ing quite common with Presidential con
ventions. Should this contingency occur,
there is one character that rises up in Ro
man grandeur, the embodiment of the hon
esty and purity that prevailed in the pub
lic service during the good old antebel
lum days. Judge Warner would discharge
the duties of the Executive office with a
firmness and honesty that would do honor
to the Grand old Stato. lie lias passed a
large portion of bis life in various posi
tions of honor and trust to which his peo
ple have called Imn, and during all that
time he lias performed Ids official duties
without a breath of suspicion being raised
against him. and has ever maintained an
.unflinching and untarnished integiity. A
term in the Executive Chair would be a
crowning compliment to a long and useful
life m the public service.

Wc arc very glad that a short communi
cation from **C. \V. 5.,” in our issue of
to-day. affords the termination of n discus
sion tiiat has been held between him and
ourself. We Oeg leave to assure “C. W.
-S.” that in our previous articles, it was far
from our intention to disparage his mental
abilities. We have always regarded him
as a sprightly writer, and regretted the ne
cessity which forced us as a matter of self
defence to indulge in a discussion, which
was narrowed down to little less than a
personal matter. During a little over two
years of editorial duty, for the first time
such a thing has occurred, and we trust
there will be no occasion for a repetition
while we wield the quill. As to the merits
of the discussion, of course the people, as
in all other cases, must judge for them
selves.

The following editorial appeared in the
last week's Oglethorpe Echo :
We have in the recent past given harsh
and we now find unjust criticism upon the
resignation of Senator Oorijon and the mo
tives attributed to Gov. Colquitt in ap
pointing his successor. To one not per
sonally acquainted with these gentlemen, n
hasty survey of the circumstances attend
ing this coup d'eiut seems clothed in sus
picious mystery, and no one can blame
credulous public for demanding an exn an
ation from those whom they had so higuly
honored.
'i'lio c.vp’anation was given, but together
with many others, the Editor of this pa
per refused to he convinced. There wen
many points upon which we were not sat
isfied. and it required a more searching ex
planation than that conveyed in the pub
lished speeches to clear our mind of doubt.
During our recent visit to Atlanta we
had interviews with both Gen. Gordon and
Gov. Colquitt. They gave ns a willing
ear. and made plain every suspicious cir
cumstance. We left their presence clearly
convinced that every step taken by these
gentlemen was prompted by patriotism
and honor. No one can look upon their
faces and harbor an ungenerous thought.
You see written on the face of Gordon, in
letters carved by the sabre and bullet, a
love of country as enduring as life itself.
We defy anyone to remain in the presence
of our Governor an hour—look in his clear
and honest eye. watch that kind, lender
face, and see Uto min who fur mouths has
horn* abuse ibd msnit from a people for
whom lie fought so valiantly and has loved
sodearly ami upon quitting his presence
brand bint a traitor ! Gov. Colquitt is a
Christian, a hero and a statesman, and we
now agree with his excellency in denounc
ing any man "a liar or a thief,” who,
knowing Gov. CidquiU personally, charges
him with corruption. If tin-re fs pure
and incorruptible man on earth, it is Allred
11. Colquitt.
Plmt Gov. Colquitt has committed c -
rors in his administration nolle will deny.
But uur ptoplu must not lay them lit tbe
door of corrupt or impure motives. Ilis
official mi/-takes nre Httrihu able to the
bend and n-t tho In-art. We believe the
grave fault with our Governor i> that be
thinks every mm actuated by the same
tiure and honorable motives that prompts
bis own heart. He reposes too notch con
fidence in his friends, and at their door can
be laid Gov. Colquitt's every mistake.
On this score alone we expect to vote
against his re-election, mid will use our in
fluence to tfiat end. But if Vie tight is
made on charges of bribery or corruption,
and tbe election of Gov. Colquits is neees
ary to vindicate his character and that of
iln- gallant and patriotic Gordon, then wo
will unfurl his name nt our masthead and
battle for tiis endorsement by the sover
eign voters of Georgia. It would tie an
eternal shnme for the Empire State tonltix
this unjust and degrading stigma upon two
of her most gallant soldiers and unswerv
•ng patriots that stood bv the South
through her darkest hours of peril. The
people of Georgia will not endorse or tole
rate such charges; and the best way to
re-elect Gov. Colquitt is for his enemies to
pursue the contemptible, false and degrad
ing course they have mapped out.
