Class Matter
The (j»and Jury Pre-
sentments.
Since quite a number of peo¬
ple want to kn3w why The Re¬
cord doesn’t give its readers the
grand jury presentments follow
ing each couit as heretofore, we
cheerfully explain. Its this
way: There *as a grand jury
not so long ago that thought
possibly the county papers
could afford to publish the pre¬
sentments,together with itemiz
ed reports of all the officers for
$5 or $7.50 oach. They we^e
not printers—thay didn’t know
anything about the cost. Our
position then was that since the
papers had given the county an
hundred times this much free
publicity each year that the
county should, at least, pay ac¬
tual cost for the work. We set
oar price at TEN dollars, very
resonable, The jurors^some of
them couldn’t stand $30 for the
work, and decided to carry
these presentments in only one
paper, the paper with the least
circulation at that time of any
in the county. We didn’t kick,
but let 'er go. If the grand jury
desired to keep from the tax¬
payers and general public that
to which they were justly en¬
titled, the Record c( uld stand
it, and we did. Since then the
jurors have been “following
suite,” ard the Record hasn’t
been offered the presentments
for publication. We don’t want
them, either, at less than cost.
The Lavonia Times aqd Record
did publish them a year ago, but
we got the TEN dollars for the
job, even though the balance
wa- made-up bv officers in the
county who believed in letting
the people know what they
were doing, This time—the last
session of court—a vote was
taken, and the presentments
given the Carnesville Herald.
That is all right with us. We
like the Herald, and sympathize
with them in having to carry
all the “exhibits” at so low a
figure. But here’s our position
about grand jury presentments:
Franklin county is not broke;
wc are not on the pauper list.
There’s no need to “strain at
gnats and swallow camels-’'
The cost for paying a legiti¬
mate—-reasonable—common-
sense—price for this work and
letting these presentments go
in every paper as should be the
case would never be felt by the
tax-payer, and the tax-payer
who thinks knows it wouldn’t.
Th« Record does not f»vot ex*

-ounty in any way-never have
never will. But we do believe
in gj V j n g the peopi e 0 f the
county that to which they are
justly entitled—a report of the
work of their public servants,
as found by the bodj chosen as
investigators. If any rnan
thinks the publication of grand
jury presentments at a reason¬
able price will put our county
in debt, we'd like for him to
figure out £ist how much
increase per acre of land in
taxes this would amount to.
Take a mighty good f*rm to
make a penny!
Then, leaders, our reason for
not publishing the presentments
is that we do enough work for
the county free gratis at best,
and we're not overly anxious to
do more while every other
person gets pay for his services.
Isn't that reason enough, old
lady? -Royston Record-
