Next Wednesday being the fourth of
July, the Journel will celebrate the day
by taking a holiday.
Mr. James Marks, died at his res
idence about 4 o’clock in the afternoon
«>f the 20th instant, and was buried at
Union on the 21st.
Gus Hart, negro, sentenced to the
chain gang for 12 months for carrying
to Hill’s convict farm, in Wilkes coun
ty on Sundav last. .
Curtis Newsom,who killed the negro,
Frank Woodall, surrendered himself to
sheriff Speir last week.and on Monday,
■with the lads Bill Newsom and Fran z
Jochan. had a preliminary trial before
Judge Neal, of the county court. The
two lads were discharged, and Curtis ^
Newsom released under a bond of $300.
The evidence indicates a strong case of
self defense.

Last Sunday this county was visited
by a tremendous heavy rain with con¬
siderable wind. A great many crops
were needing it badly while others were
rather foul. We have not heard of any
damage that the wind or rain either

door steps and fractured the left fore
arm*. In the absence of Dr. Walker,
her grand-father, Dr. Gheesling was

We regret to learn of the death cf
one of Rev. B. M. Callaway’s twin in
fants, which occurred a few days ago.
The child was only a month or two
old.
Mr. E. Y. Hill has one of the finest
fish ponds in the State, and it is alive
with large and small carp. These fish
have recently spawned ; the old young and
ones are only about two weeks

The railroad has compromised the
matter of discontinueing the Sunday
train by ordering the engineer not to
blow tne whistle on Sunday. So on
that day the train silently glides out
of town on the way to the main line
and as silently returns on schedule

Mrs. Scoggins, who lived in Mr. J.
B. Wooten’s neighborhood, died last
Ttiesday at the advanced age of 83.
Her husband was a soldier in the war
of 1812, having enlisted in W ishing
ton. During her life she applied to
the government fora pension, but
there was so great circumlocution con
necteil with obtamiug it that she never
received it.
