bun and to Georgia.
That country works miracles of
health. There ie no medicine in
the world which can beat simply
sitting by the little tavern at
Clayton and drinking in the moun
tain air, listening to the splashing
of cold streams, and looking up at
old Screamer!

IN THE MOUNTAINS
Atlanta Journal.
Mr. Eugene Mitchell has been
spending a week at Clayton, in Ra
bun county. He talks interesting
ly—enthusiastically—of that sec
tion.
‘‘There is not,” said lie ‘"a health
ier spot on earth than Rabun coun
ty. I got back my appetite and
gained flesh galore. There is life
and strength in the breezes of Ra
bun. Last Saturday night and
Sunday we had log fires in Clayton,
it was so cold.
“The supply of speckled trout in
the mountain streams is short.
The people up there say that the
storms of last winter choked the
streams with gushing torrents
which killed hundreds of these fish
by beating them against the rocks.
This, they say, accounts for the
■ short supply.”
Mr. Mitchell says that the speck
led trout are not natives of the
mountain streams of northeast.
Georgia . They were brought from
bevond the Blue Ridge mountains
many years ago and propagated
ill the streams on tliis side of those
mountains. They are just as-fioe,
however, as the ultra-mouij|ain
speckled trout. ...
Mr. Mitchell also says that the
people of Clayton believe that the
Black Diamond railway” will yet
pi;.be built. ■ This line was projected
before the war. The route extends
from Port Royal, S.C., up through
Walhalla, round through Clayton,
and through Rabun Gap to Knox-
' Vllle. . Some' of thejmusbnry where
the old road was worked can be
seen near Clayton, and "is magnifi
cent, About $8,000,000 was ex
pended in work on this road in the
byng ago. Engineers are now in
the field locating the line and the
people of Rabun tliinx the Black
Diamond Railroad” will yet
be a reality. It is between 3
qnd 400 miles from Port Royal to
Knoxville via ' the route of the
“ Black Diamond,” and very much
0$ the line was graded years ago.
If bpiltdt would make the distance
by rail between Port Royal and
Charleston and points an the coast
of South Carolina to Knoxville sev
eral hundred miles shorter.
There is also talk up in Rabun
about building a railroad from
Walhalla. through Clnyton. Rabun
county, Towns, Union f Far 11 in
right on to Chattanooga.
Mr. Mitchell «avs Clayton is a
beautiful little town of 800 people,
nestling in a valley, with Screamer
towering 8,200 feot on one side
Md and another giant whose name
I have forgotten on the other. The
scenery about Clayton is of the
wildest and most picturesque de
scription. The richest river lands
in Georgia lie in the valleys along
the streams. The are worth from
$76 to $126 an acre, but are not for
sale. ClaYton is 17 miles from
Tallulah Falls, reached only by
private conveyance over the rough
est road in the world.
Worried, worked down, with no
appetite, off in flesh, Mr. Mitch
ell penetrated to the heart of Ra
bun.
After ten days he returned, rosy,
strong, ten pounds heavier, feel
ing years younger, and with an ap
petite* that is almost ravenous/’ ;
Wbat a tribute is all this to Ra.
