we counted 27 Irish potatoes from

beatiful red color and a new variety
in this section, and we believe are
excellent.
Revs, Sanders, Evans, Taylor,
Barrett, Maney, Dillingham, Pitts,
and Allman are conducting a pro
tracted meeting at Pleasant Grove
this week. They are having great
success in bringing sinners to re
pentance.

for old Indies to keep small articles
of various kinds, but never did we
hear of a cigar being Kept 15 years.
Fifteen years ago J. T. McConnell
gave Mrs. Dr. Long a cigar and
she kept it until a ( few days ago.
she gave it to her grandson, J. m.
Long, and he declares he never
smoked a better one.
So far as we are able to get re-
ports of crops in the county there
will be an unusually large yield.
The corn crop around Clayton is
immense. The mast, both bitter
and sweet we are tn]d is unusually
heavy this year. So it seems we
are in a land of mils and honey,
and we all should ict real pretty
and feel grateful to Him who giv-
oth.
G, V . Garrett has painted the
Blue Ridge Hotel, the store house
and new dwelling house of W. H.
Duncan and the residence of
“Bud” York and will soon begin
painting the court house. Now,
if Pope Barrow and some others
will follow suit our little moun
tain city will begin to compare
with other progressive towns. Let
the good work goon.

The contest for the five .dollar
premium for the largest melon
raised in the county has begun,
Lust Saturday morning Mr. J. F.
Earl asked us to witness tbe pul
ling of a melon that he wished to
put in the contest. It wc.ghed
35$ pounds. This is the largest
melon brought to town this season.
We understand B.E.Rumey has one
on the vine that weighs 41 pounds
and he expects it to weigh by the
time it matures 60 pounds.
Deputy John Godfrey brought
to town yerterday Eve Reed, hand
cuffed, for violating the internal
revenue laws. Among the hqn-
dred men Dept. Godfrey has ar
rested in the county this man Reed
is the third one he has put the
cuffs on. We*doubt if there is in
the state a more popular officer in
the service among his home people.
He is one of our best friends in
the newspaper business.. He was
the first subscriber to the Tribune
and has aided us continually sinoe
our stay here.
A lively party from Anderson county,
8. C., have been quartered in town in
