TO THE TEACHERS.
I am glad of this opportunity.
If I can not have the pleasure
of meeting the teachers of Rabun
county face to face, I can have the
opportunity to exchange ideas on
methods of teaching, through a
column of our kind editor’s paper.
This, is written especially to our
brother and sister teachers who
have not visited or joined The
Teachers’ Association, which is
proving n success.
I would have been very glad if
every teacher of Rabun county had
been present at our last meeting.
Had you, no doubt, you would
have treasured up some good ideas
on teaching for future use, ex
plained by Prof, VV. T. Daniel and
other accomplished teachers, j
was greatly benefited. I put some
of the new methods I learned into
practice and I am much pleased of
»uch rich jewels by which to excite
more interest in my school-room.
What is the use of teachers meet
ing? It inspires us with profession
ul enthusiasm, kids us to get a
clearer insight into the scientific
side of education, and to penetrate
more deeply into the spirit of teach
ing.
Experience has proved that the
best way for the attainment of these
objects.-4s to be found in holding
general meetings.
The monthly teachers’ meeting
has become an established feature
in all educational systems which
are under the leadership of pro
gressive eduoators. It seems, pro
temporo, most difficult to interest
a great many teachers.
We should try and maxe our
meetings productive of the richest
results. WeriowHiave the oppor
tunity if we will only accept it, nnd
I believe we have with us teachers
of wisdom and experience; they
will help you if yon will come and
hear them. We often need encour
agement, especially when wo are
teachingalope, in our violated dis
tricts, surrounded by obstacles and
discouragements, weighed down by
cure and finding, pone to sympa
thize with us, We feel almost ready
to abandon our most worthy pro
fession. At this moment what
shall we younger teachers do to be
tenewed in out seemly dreaded
work? Visit the Teachers’Associ
ation aud we will be strengthened
by our elder brothers. We will
then return to otir school with Hew
vigor for our daily work, and more
cheerfully, feeling that we have
noble brotherhoods of kindred spir
its laboring iu tbe same field.
No doubt we all want to be pro
gressive teachers, and to be so we
must try to *‘parj passu” with tbe
leading educators. We may have
good methods of teaching we have
learned from some authors, but we
want the improved method of
teaching if there be any, and by at
tending the teachers’ meeting, we
will soon learn whether they have
any better way of teaohing than
we have.
1 trust as we scan the broad finds
of education which at early dawn
we bang each bladA of grass with
gems, but not leave the fields, oh so
soon, alLparched and dry when the
sun’s burning heat is poured upon
(hem, but let us enrich our hearts
with the truest incentives of edu
cation.
