No, my son, that bright light
which you. see in the North is not
an Aurora Borealis, neither is it the
woods on fire. It is only the smile
of satisfaction upon the countenance
of Janies G. Blainc t as he views the
contending elements in the Demo-
i Wradc party. Ho sees one faction
fighting for .“free silver" and staking
all on that issue; another will stand
or fall on “tariff reform,” while still
another will ditvfor the tt-ub-Treasu-

The platform of the democratic
party should embrace, substantially,
the 'demands for tariff reform, finan
cial relief, and an honest, economical
administration of the government.
No class 'legislation should be toler
ated. Fair and equitable laws, bear-
rng upon all classes alike, should be
favored. The universal demands
for these reforms will not be unheed
ed by jthe democratic party, the
great party of the people. Trusts,
combines, monopolies and extrava
gance, will lie given a black eye by
the next democratic convention. And
the people will endorse tho action
at the election in November.
Maxims for the New Year.

that yon shall bo mournful. Make
it the best year of all your life—the
brightest, the happiest and the best.
Imbue your heart with the freshness
of the morning, your soul with the
sparkle of the dawn. Resolve by good
deeds and thoughts, to make this the
most triumphant year of your life.
As a aeries of short maxims to carry
with you through this year let me
give you these:

Origin of Leap Year,
Colin Shackleford said, “Some one
asked me tho other day what was
the origin of women proposing mar-,
ringe during leap year. I looked it
up, and while it may not bo to all, I
dare say it will interest many.
“ In the y,iar 1288 a statute was
published by the Scotch Parliament,
of which the following is a copy, and
is, to my mind the origin of tho cus
tom or idea. I da not know that it
is a customer ever was:
“‘It is ordaiut that during the
reign of Her Maist Blessit
Majestic Margaret, liko maiden,
of bait.h high and low
estate, shall hae liberty to speak
to the man she likes. Gil he refuse
to take her to be, his wyf, ho shall
be mulct in tho sum of one hundred-
ity poundis or loss, as his estait may
bee, except and always gif he can
make it appear that he is botrotht to
another woman, then he shall bo

“ After tho dear old Margaret had
passed away the women became
clamorous for their privileges, and to
appease them, another act of Parlia
ment allowed them-Bte privilege, cv

The Shady Divio Resolutions.
We reprint tho now famous Shady
Dale Alliance resolutions, without,
comment, save to recommend their
careful perusal and to ask the consid
eration due the momentous quos'tions
involved. They certainly suggest,
perhaps, the very best remedies for
the troubles, financial and otherwise,
that now afflict the cotton growing
states: j
First. That wo, as well as a large
majority of our brethren, have lieen
led astray by the sophistry of de
signing persons into following the
ignisfatuus of speedy relief by tho
government, and. have lost sight of
the first principles of the Farmers'
Alliance.
Second. That we will receive
with grateful hearts any relief that
our legislators may inaugurate. But
we believe we can get upocdy, safe,
sure and honorable relief only
through brawn and muscle intelli
gently directed.
Third. That we go back to the
first principles of all concerned, as
sert our manhood, work and so di
rect our energies as to master the
great emergencies now staring us in
the face and covering every house
hold with debt, gloom and despond
ency.
Fourth. That each of us so ar
range our crops for 1893 that, with
ordinary seasons, wo will raise an
abundance of food crops, grain, meat,
forage, vegetables, fruits, etc, for
home consumption.
Fifth. That we economize unto
frugality our time, food, dress, and
discard altogether the luxuries for
the time, lmy nothing but actual nec
essaries to carry on the farm, eco
nomically managed.
Sixth. Believing that wc- are
greatly to blame for extravagance
and waste on our farms, by careless
fmdmon, that wo endeavor to »o
school ourselves to frugality that our
influence may be potently felt and
our example aealously followed by
