H.uitwkm, Ga., May 80,—In an
interview to-day with the Journal
correspondent Air. J. T. W. Vernon
took occasion to make a statement of
bis knowledge of “Gideon’s Band”
with a view to setting himself light,
and correcting any erroneous impres
sions that may lmve gone abroad.
“in the first place,” said Mr. Ver--
uon^‘1 did not say at Livonia that
the state alliance had anything to do
directly with ‘Gideon’s Band.' It was
while 1 was in attendance on the
state alliance as a delegate from Hart
county, however, that I first learned
of the existence of this hand.
“Mr. DeJarnott, of Greene comity,
told me all 1 know about the organ
ization. He said that lie was author
ized to get ii)i such a hand in oaeli
county in the eighth district, and
that a man had been appointed to
do tho smile work in each of the
other districts.
“1 was told that ‘Gideon’s Band’
was something like Free Masonry—
one degree higher than- the regular
illlance and that it would not con
flict with my political or religions
views. Being a Mason, I knew that
if it, was like Masonry it was a good
thing, so with this assurance from
Mr. DeJarnott, Brother McFarland
Mid myself were initiated into what
we afterwards found to ho one of the
foulest machines of political corrup
lion ever concocted on American
soil.

How It Works.
A oorresondent of the Mneon Tel

The mule was not disposed to car
ry the darkey. As lie started to
jump on the animal’s back, she jerked
bridle out of his hands and darted to
the house, leaving the coon on the
ground, mad enough to kill her.

We are Brethren.
When politics rages to such an ex

their politics are not the same, wc

who printed all DcJarneU’s blanks,
for lie had a lot with him. Tho in
itiation feo was *2. I was to pay
him wlien I got the baud made up in
my county.
“I consider such an organization
a clear i use of conspiracy against the
principles of the alliance, and I would
therefore, have nothing to do with it.
as soon ns I discovered its real na
ture.
“When Dr. Robins was oil his
rounds lecturing the county nllbint'es
in the eighth district last fail, DcJar-
nett was with him, and they came to
my house. De.Iarnctt wanted to
know if I had the hand ready for
him to organize. 1 tol l him 1 lmd
done nothing. I saw at, once that lie
was crestfallen, for lie lmd lost Iris
‘golden fleece.’
“Tills is all I know personally
about ‘Gideon’s Band.’ I have heard
of something that happened at Ocala
that, gave rise to the hand which, if
proved to he true, would he worse
than dynamite in the third party
camp.
“Brother McFarland, who joined
the hand tliQsame time I 'lid, was at
Lavonia when I exposed the thing.
He is a truthful man and I know I
could appeal to him to correct then
and there any false statements I
might make.
“Brother McFarland did'iit say a
word in answer to my statement, as
every one present at Lavonia that
night will testify. I am sorry that
lie or any other good mail should
suffer himself to he shorn of his
locks by a Delilah and fall into the
hands of the philistine*."
Mr. Vernon said that he hoped the
democratic press of the state would
give publicity to this statement in
justice to him. “I cannot bo heard
much longer,” he said, “as I am in
tiiy seventieth year; Inst 1 still love
ray God, my country, my wife and
children and white supremacy. 1
hope and pray that the last trace of
the third party ntny he wiped out nt
this fall's election, never to he res-
urreeted for the sake of greed and
office.”
