According to history our American
people seeks promotion, and when
they become unpopular in one party

these third party people claim to be

dispute their assertion; if they are

BIG DAY IN VALDOSTA.
RALLY
GRAND DENOCRATIC
AND BARBECUE.
Tlio l’ooplfi KicctrLIcd by thfl Kloquonco of

•* i»r—A Mont Excellent Dlmior,
The Gazettis is held over, a day
that it might carry to its readers the
first report of tlio magnificent demo
cratic rally and barbecue to-day un
der the auspices of the Valdosta
District democratic club.
Tho day was a moBt auspicious
one; a thin cloud overshawowed the
sun sufficiently to break tlio force of
its rays, and still not dense enough
to send a shower of rain to mar the
exercises of the day,
A big crowd was there, ljpt loss
than six hundred voters from Horrien
county, ftp equal number from Brooks,
mid a line representation from Col
quitt, Irwin, Coi'feo, Ware, Clinch
and Echols counties. The democra
cy of Lowndes county was out in full
numbers. Competent judges say
that thero was not less limn six
thousand people present, mid surely
four thousand voters.
There was quite a sprinkling of
third parly people and straddlers
present, and they wore handled by
the speakers kindly and gently, but
witli lirumuHs.
Tho speaking oocnrod under a tre
mendous arbor that had been provid

Capt. W. M. Ilammond, of Thom-

his matchless eloquence can imagine
what a,grand speech lie made under
tlie inspiration of such a yast audience.

The objections third parly people
are making to the principle! mid poli
cy of tho demoeralic party were
taken tip scriuliin and answered, tho
speaker showing that tlieso objec
tions have no foundation in fact ami
were utterly untrue. He said they
wore the cunningly devised sophisms
of tho enemies of southern democra
cy hatched up for tlio speoifio purpose
'of bringing division mid ultimate
destruction of tlio solid south, lie
conjured those who,— following tlie
lead of republican emisaricsi of tho
stripe of Weaver, and Simpson, and’
Lease, and Boat,—had gone-out of
the democratic ranks, to. come hack
to tlie old party of tho fathers make
common cause with democratic com
patriots against the oppressions of
centralized power its taught and
practiced by tlie republican party,
tie urged them to come back to the
good old ship of democracy, with
that safe ainl gallifnt captain) ilrovor
Cleveland, proudly treading tho
quarter deck, and help to steer her
safely into pors with a glorious victo
ry, He closed with one ofTlis
brightest perorations.
Ifon. Dtil’onl Guorry, of Maeoii,
was the second speaker, ami lie made
otic of ins characteristic conservative
mid vote-winning addresses. Ho
started out with tho statement that
it. was, indeed, humiliating to him to
lie called poll to go out upon the
hustings charged with tlie duty of
defending democratic principles and
conduct, among people who had boon
nurtured and feared in tlio very lap
of dumctnrauy. The thought was
appalling that men who had grown
gray in tlm service of the doi^oorntiu
party giving ajd mid com fort to a
political party, witli none save office-
seekers apd adventurers in thole,ad,
founded and fostered upon false
charges against nnd-inisrepreaenttions
of tho democratic party mid her lead
ers. He then proceeded !o analyse
the charges made by tlio so-called
people’s parly against democracy
and.to show % indisputable proof
front tlio record tlmt these charges
were false. Ho showed that the
republican party alone was responsi
ble for adoption of the national bunk
ing system, tlie demonetization of
silver, and so on through the long
list of republican abuses and oppress-
ioti** vrhich tho -people’s party was
now vtfrtoavofing to fasten upon
democracy. He. also, liemoehed
those who had gone off witli the
third party, to take heed to’theylevi-
ous way they went going. It would
be fruitful of nothing but remorse
and regret. He was listened to witli
rapt attention and Ids speech was
perhaps the most effective speech of
the day.
Dinner was annonncod at tho close
of Mr. G Perry's address, and there
was a superabundance of good tilings
for all present. Tho barbecue was a
great success. ■
Tlio first speaker after dinner was
Hon. - Robert L. Berner, of Forsyth,
lie soomed to ho in a most happy
frame of mind and greeted his audi
ence with a smilo, which ho main-
taljiod until near the close of his
brilliant address, when lie reafchcd
the serious pars and piled facts upon
facts to maintain the premises lie had
assumed. lie said the speakers pre
ceding had left him little to do but
exhort the people wiio had gono off
after tho new-born heresies of tlie
third party to come back to the party
of their fathers as did tho prodigal son
of Holy Writ. lie would guar
antee that tlie fatteaj calf would
bo killed and a feast prepared, and
that the robe of forgiveness would be
put about their shoulders; there was
one promise ho would not make—
that they would bo clothed witli dea
cons’ mid stewards’ orders (office)
immediately upon their return. He
made a proposition that would give
an idea of the composition of the
audience: all who were democrats to
hold up their bands and vice versa ;
only one man Imd the moral courage
to announce allegiance to tho third
party although there were others in
tlie amliynco known to bo in sympa
thy witli tlie heresy. lie pitied a
party or body of men who would
declare intelligence, temperance and
virtue to be secondary to tlio ques
tions of finance, transportation mid
land as was Reduced in the people's
party platform, when thu very
strength and stability of our free
government depended solely upon
tlie intelligence, temperance and
virtuo of llio people. Ho was
not amazed at tlie leaders of such n
party instructing their benighted fol
lowers to talk about finance in this
campaign to tho exclusion of those
weightier matters of tariff reform,
Federal control of elections, popular
education mid kindred topics. Hu
showed from the record- how demo
crats Imd voted upon all the ques
tions which formed the issues involv
ed in this campaign, fully oxhonerat-
ing tlie leaders of the party from all
tile unjust and unkind imputations
made against them by the republican
party and its allies—.one of which
was tlie people’s parly. The only
result of tlio third party would lie to
assist tho republican party in its su
premacy ami control of tlio govern
incut ami a continuation of reckless
and extravagant administration of its
affairs.
Hon. IL G. Tumor, nominee for
congress from the oloventh district,
was the next spsakcr, and ho detain
ed the audience but a few minutes,
presenting forcibly mid effectively
the issues of tlie campaign by means
of a few , simple object lessons. In
this way lie showed tho fallacy of
the republican effort to wipe ottt tlio
color line, destroy tho barriors justly
reared* against- race amalgamation,
and sustain the damning policy of
race intermnrringe. He also illusti-a-
trated tho inconsistency and oppres-
sISn of tlio tariff laws in tlio same
way.
