The Crime of .-i Cureless Nurse,
Last Sunday evening the-colored
nurse was left alarm in the room with
the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. II. A
Bennett. Sitting near the lire place
she went to sleep and the babe rolled
out of her lap into (lie fire. Little
Jake Bennett was play ing in tlie yard
below, and seeing some smoke es
cape from the w indow, ran up stairs
and found liis little infant brother,
ivllose cries were growing faint,
writhing in torture as his flesh roast
ed anil burned on the rod hot coals
of fire. A loud scream as he drew
the burning form of the little one
from the fire brought Mrs. Bennett,
who had fallen asleep in an adjoining
room, to the scene, and everything
was done for tlie little sufferer possi
blc. Burned to the waistband, so
deep, until tlie sinews and leaders of
its lower limb's are drawn beyond tlie
reach of skill to re*tore to their nor
mal state, tlie little sufferer lingers in
the balance between life and death
Relieved of her burden, wrapped in
tlie quiet repose afforded by peace
ful slumbers, the thoughtless brute
slept, while her helpless charge roast
ed on the fire at her feet. What
picture! How forcible docs it ap
peal to mothers who too often subject
their little ones to criminal negli

over to whelps whose vigilenco is
measured by their otvn careless per
sonal desires Without any regard for
