Tlie fact that south and mhldlo
Georgia la the greatest pouch cohntry
in tho world Is dawning upon tho
public mind. Hardly a day passes
but that wo hear of something now
that goes to show how tho tide is
drifting. It Is all very well to talk
of the star of empire which is thought
to be moving over westward, but
there is no dimming out tho pleasant
star of intelligence that spreads over
tho F.tnpiro Stale of the South and
grows brighter day by day, develop
ing wealth that has lain hidden oven
from those whose faith in the future
of their state remained nnslinkeii
through the darkest period of its his
tory.
The iullated boom that 1ms done
so much for southern California and
her fruit sections gives placo to con
fidence In southern Georgia, based
upon solid facts. Experts have made
their investigations and have gone
away satisfied to bring back with
them those who know well the values
of tho soil, and these in turn are sat
isfied that under the surface of <Joor-
gia soil there • lies gold that in ay bo
plucked from the tree whose roots
draw life and nourishment from the
virgin day, Within tho last, year
thousands of punch trees have been
planted in middle and south Georgia,
hut this is only the beginning of what
would lie unjustly called n boom, be
cause of the odium that attaches to
the word. Boon the results of the
Investments will bo known and thou
we may look out for tlie rush. It is
no experiment, Wise farmers of
Georgia have long heforo thin seen
the opportunity, nml now they tire
prepared to show by the result of ma
ny consecutive crops that tho fruit re
gions of Georgia compare favorably
with those in any other part of the
world, in tact, the comparison is not
pleasant for those who have boasted
of their own peculiar garden spot. A
few years ago tho output, of poaches
in Georgia brought only thousands of
dollars, now it amounts up Into mil
lions, Thu result is a growing de
mand for the fruit and a growing de
mand for the fruit,IiumIn by those who
Hie accustomed to watch the dovel
opulent of industries as affecting the
values of land in different part of the
I lulled iltates. There is one danger,
however, and a danger that should he
carefully guarded against by our pen
pie. Wo refer to the danger from
spciMihiturs, boomers, sharks, shysters
and the aggregation of rascals who
act ns middle men and grow rich off
the ignorance of both seller and buy
or. If the lauds of middle nod south
west Georgia aro parcelled out In
blocks of thoumitids of acres to he
sold again "from the map” by those
middlemen in Northern tiiilcs, wo
fear that, diseredit may bo cast, upon
the country itself before the trees are
planted. We must profit by tho Ills
lory of other states and other nidus
tries, and knowing that wo have a
good thing, we should foster it with
care, -Macon Telegraph,
to the contractors on the Thomnsvillo

penses duting 18012 to pay the inter

“ Cyeloneta ” farm with money that

ing 181)1 only one per cent., while
the operating expunses have increas
ed 111 per cent. 'That he is not the

County Institutes.
Commissioner llradwcll has issued
a circular prescribing rules and reg
ulations for the meeting ot the county
tcachors’ institutes. Speaking of his
ideas in regard to these institutes the
Atlanta Constitution says:
"Captain Brail well is starting the
utility institutes, or normal schools,
out lilts year with a heartier zest.
Ilo says these institutes are produc
tive of great gum! and that they
ought to be encouraged. 'The ming
ling of teachers with each uthcr and
thu whetting of mind against mind,
ho thinks, call but bring about good
vaults in thu cotumtin schools. Thu
teachers all get together at these
comity institutes uud tell how they
teach such and such a book, and how
they do in this case or ill that, and
thus givo to each other u good deal
of instruction,
'The .State .School Commissioner
says he is going to do ull in his (low

this year, and seems to think with
favor ii|ioii thu idea of having sevoral
counties represented at one session
