MONEY IN POTATOES.
How tho Farmer* of burntor County
Make Them:Fay.
Asikuku's, Jannary 20,—Last year
Si. Hawkins, of this city, planted one
ami a half .acres.,in- 'sweet potatoes,
and from this small traot gathered
460 bushels of choice yellow yams.
Yesterday he had five or six two
horse wagon loads of tho tubers haul
ed to town, and sold them ns fast as
they could be measured up at 50 cts.
per bushel.
Tho gross returns from this orop
alone will bo 8280, and as the entire
cost of planting and cultivation did
not exceed $15, it oan easily be seen
that there is money in furming.
It is said that a farmer noar Leslie,
lit this county, has 1,G00 bushels of
potatoes on band now, all of which
be raised on pine laud at a nominal
cost. These will bring from 60 to
76 cents per bushel during the next
two or three months, and will net the
owner more ’money than would a
dozen acres planted in cotton.
“The Georgia farmer is learning
at lust that it is profitable to raise bis
own bog .produce,” remarked one of
the leading city merchants yesterday.
“Our reports from over tho State
show that a large number of hogs
have, been fattened and kiHcd this
season. In -western Georgia the largo
crops of corn piado it possible for the
people to fatten many bogs, while in
the eastern part of the State 60 per
cent, more pork 1ms been packed
than last year. In tho central .part
fully three-I'ourtlm of the farmers
have laid by sufficient meat for this
year’s use. I tell you that all speaks
volumes for the growing thrift and
common sense of our Georgia agri-
ultnrists. When our farmers make
themselves independent of the wcBt
in this mattered meat they will have
lone more for themselves and the
State than by any possible political
victory tho farmer voto could
achieve,”
