The glorious fourth was celebrated
hero Monday. The mill did not run
at all, and most of the business
houses were closed from 9 a. m. to 1
p. m., some being decorated with the
Stars and Stripes. There was no
•i great demonstration of patriotism or
patriotic meeting, but the day was
passed as each person chose to spend
it, mostly in ont-of-door exercises.

We are pleaaeU to learn that “oar
boye” Ed Hikes and Ileber Kent,
though not native Georgian* are rep

ibly. Ed Hikes has just been ap
pointed to the place of “Orderly
Sergeant,” highest non-commissioned
officer, and Heber Kent is fast com

by bis genial ways and accomodat
ing spirit. Mrs. Hikes lias been and
still expresses hereself as opposed ^to
her son remaining in the urm^but
we note the pleased and fond look
that flashes from her eyes as she
reads over the letter telling of his
promotion and objections have be
come very faint.
Neighbor Kent shipped his first
peaches on last Saturday. We know
he felt proud, for he has worked
hard for three years past and cer
tainly has a fine orchard.
Revival epidemics are breaking

We hud the pleasure of spending
part of last Sunday with Mr. Corbly
at his dairv faun and were right
royally entertained. Mr. Corbly is
contemplating several changes in his
business, not the least of which is a
move closer into the city. He will get
some new, fresh cows. We wish
him increasing success.
Mrs. Hikes* mother and sister left
Tifton Monday for an extended vjnjfc
to Louisville and Chicago. Mrs.
Tucker spent a good part of last
spring in our settlement and we hope
to see her among us early in the full.
We bad a very small attendance
at our Sunday school last Sunday on
account of mettingi being held at
Betbesda, but would like to remind
teachers aud scholars that tbeir first

Richard Harding Davis, writing
from the scene of battle to the Phil
adelphia Ledger, gives this incident:
A Spaniard, who was in the fight,
and who liter was captured by the
Cabans, said of the volunteers:
“They did not fight as other sol
diers. When we fired a volley they
advanced, instead of going back.
The more we fired the nearer they
came to us. We are not used to
fighting men who act so.”

Macoh, j.une 30.—The Third
Regiment, U. 8. V. have now fully
900 men emitted, all of whom are
uniformed.
We are camped in the Park. Drill
twice a day for an hour each time.
The gnne and ammunition have ar
rived, and as soon as our boys make
more progress with tho squad drill,
they will be given them.
Since -Saturday night, we have
taken our meula at camp, and are
much better satisfied with our food
than we anticipated. We have beef,
potatoes, light-bread, corn-bread, to
matoes, colTee, bacon uud rice. Even
with that variety of well cooked food,
we occasionally find a kicker, and
when he is tracked up, he is found
to be one who is now fed better than
he ever was before.
Captain Carter’s company stands
in the front as to progress, neatness
and good behavior. All of the offi
cers who have seen service unite in
the statement that, the Third Regi
ment, U. 8. V., is the best behaved
body of men tney have eyer seen as
sembled.
As to our destination, we know
nothing. Some say Honolulu, others
Manila, Porto Itico or Cuba.
Company “E." has had very few
men sick. Only one or two, for
twenty-four hours at a time.
The non-commisaioued officers were
appointed to-day. Ed Hikes was
made a corporal. Company “E.” has
a nun from Sparta, Greece; one from
England; one from Switzerland;
some 35 from Fitzgerald, and nearly
every part of the state is represented.
