A cotton report say* the itaple is
four weeks lata coming in, end it
badly stained.
The surveying corps of the Atlan
tic, Valdosta and Western railroad
have been locating the line this week
from Valdosta to Albany. The line
runs within two miles of Moultrie.
The Gazette congratulates Editor
Ferbam. of the Waycross llerold. Af.
ter the close of the Spanish war, this
fall would have been a dry and mon
otenons one for him, bad not Jim
Wilkinson run for congress.
Although the primary has virtually
settled affairs politioal in Berrien, yet
the citizens of this bulwark of democ
racy in the Second should see to it
that they turn out on election day
and roll up a good, old-time demo,
cratio majority. The example would
be a good one.
At the Oetober election the people
are called upon to ratify the const!
tutional amendment for the election
of superior court judges and solicit
ore by popular vote. The people of
Berrien should study tills matter care
fully, In order to I* prepared to vote
intelligently on it when election day
arrives.
It is said to be an idea of State Li
brarian James Brown to republish
the old Georgia Beporta, many of
whioli are out of print, and for some
lime lawyers have found it exceed,
ingly difficult to obtain a complete
set. It ia said the Btate can sell them
at a moderate price, of about t- per
volume, and U is thought that there
would be a great demand for them.
Mr. Brown also suggests that the state
should publish 6,000 instead of 4,000
copies of the Acta of the Legislature;
at present only 200 copies of each set
being left for sale.'
Albany has the banner strike of
the season. Dougherty has a county
chain-gang, and a law providing that
the county shall pay the costs of offi
cers of tho oourt on each convict sen*,
to tho gang. Last week the county
commissioners refuted to pay the bills
of costa sent in by justices of the
peace, and said justices have refused
to issue any more warrants or legal
papen until their costs are paid, say
ing they are not furnishing their time
and stationery free gratis, without
pay, as Dr. Crookett would say. So
. no warrants aro issued, and crimi
nals can act as they high lonesome
please until the lawyers argue the
points in the cate.
A new and unique idea comes from
Griffin. Last week, in the ooursc of
human events and the peace and
quietude of the oommunity, it became
necessary to lynch a negro brute for
the usual crime. This was all right
and aooording to custom and prece
dent, as laid down in the unwritten
law, and no one entered any objec
tion. But a gay young coroner, tee
ing his usual little tee in eight, sum
moned a jury to hold an inquest on
the negro's body; although the con
dition in which it was found left no
donbt as to the manner in which the
culprit met his death. The jury was
duly summoned and impaneled, but
when they looked around for a body
to sit bn none was to be found. Some
thoughtful person, desiring to save
the connty trouble and expense, had
spirited if away. At last accounts
the coroner was still looking for the

In the columns of the news papers
it becomes apparent that Hon. E. P. 8.
Denmark, of Valdosta, wilt become
oaodidale for the superior ooort
judgeship of the Southern circuit.
The Gazette does not espouse the
candidacy of Mr. Denmark, or of
any other candidate, but it baa be
come apparent that some steps are
necessary to relieve the pressure on
the legal dockets of the circuit In
spring this, we retain the highest
possible opinion of the mental capac
ity of Judge Hansell. In point of
experience, or legal ability, lie stands
head and shoulders above any man
In the Southern circuit but his
health of late years has been such
that for the circuit to ask him for u
continued effort would be an injustice
to him, and by striving to render the
people of his section service, he is
doing a great injury to himself.
Ilis service to the state, extending
over fifty years of an active and use
ful life, hare been such as to need
no testimonial as to bis devotion to
duty, or to the service of his country.
It would be asking to much too re
quire him to end this by a sacrifice
of his life.
The gallant and grey-haired old
veteran should bo retired, on a hand
some pension (which the oounties of
his circuit would be proud to honor
him with) and allowed to spend his
declining years in peace and quiet,
amid the honors of an upright life
and the gratitude of his countrymen,
to whose service that life has been
devoted.

A sensational arrest was made here
Satqday by the police. Chaai Selph,
an overseer on Jesse Paulk’s place,
seven miles north of here, in Irwin
county, name to Tifton this week and
employed a wagon load of negroes to
pick cotton tor him.
The negroes returned Sunday and
told a harrowing tale of intimidation
They said that when they became
dissatisfied and wanted to leave, Belpb
presented his Winchester rifle JU
them and compelled them to go back
to work. Also, when they finished
bis cotton, he oompelled them to pick
that of another, guarding them
while at work with his rifle and
guarding them at night. When one
became troublesome he carried him to
an old well and compelling him to
look in, punched the negro with his
rifle and told him he would put him
in there if he didn’t behave.
, The negroes swore out three war
rants against Selph and lie was plaoed
under arrest by Chief McGuirt. He
gave bond and bad a prelim!
nary hearing before Justice Conger
Tuesday, when he was bound over to
the criminal term of county court,
under two of the warrants.
