The emperor of China abdicated

Mies Winnie Pavia, the “Daughter
of the Confederacy,” died Sunday at
noon at Nanraganaett Pier, after an
illness of. a few weeks. A nation
feels her lost.
Owing to the illness of bia wife,
Judge Griggs has called in hit ap
pointments for speaking in September,
He hopes to be able to resume bia
campaign early in October, however.
Mr. W. K. Roberta, who has been
an independent candidate for the
state senate from this district for
several months put, gives notice of
withdrawal on account of sickness in
bis family.
Major J. P. Hanson and Col J. M
Wilkinson, are billed for a speech in
Valdosta on the 29th. It ia hoped
ibelr “electin' ” will be u harmonious
as one of the members reported the
Wayorou meeting.
The Second Georgia regiment ar
rived in Atlanta yesterday, and met
a routing rsoeptlon. It will be mus
tered out from there. The first is
expected to leave Huntsville for Ma
con to-day, and will be mustered out
from the Central city.
-■ The editors of the Breen and
leader, over at Douglas, have drop
ped parliamentary usage in their ref
erence to each other. Atone is a
preacher and the other a Sweater it
is interesting to know how the matter
will bo settled.
Five more regiments have been or
dered to join Merritt at Manila, and
the Iowa and Oregon are ordered to
Honolulu, it ia thought to join Dew
ey’s fleet. Uncle Samuel evidently
does not Intend for any unr kraut to
he mixed up with hia Uttie ooaling
station in the Philippines.
Polities are warming Op to their
old-time oorafortable white heat over
in onr sister eonnty, the good old
state of Irwin, when politics can get
warmer and wax hotter than any
where else on the globe. Nomina
tions are always considered an un
necessary evil over there, so the
bridles are off, and the raoe is a go-
as-you-please, free for all, to a finish.
Several candidates are out for each
office and, to use an expressive
phrase, they are stirring the mud.
It ia with regret that we read the
announcement in the Albany Herald
that its contemplated May Day special
edition will not be issued, the amubnt
of advertising matter subscribed not
being sufficient to pay the cost of the
blank paper on which it was to have
been printed. Thu it a lots to Al-
btny and South Georgia, for the
Herald’s special editions hate always
been of a character calculated to be
beneficial to thu entire section; but
no one can blame the management
for refuting to bear the entile coat of
an enterprise of which .some one else
would reoeivo a lion’s share of the
benefit. The Uaxette hat tried this
costly, experiment twice* and while
the 'benefits to the section wore gen
eral, the expense fell on the paper
alone.
FOR A SYSTEM OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
The city authorities' give notice
of application to the next general
assembly for an set authorising the
establishment of a system of public
schools for the city of Tifton.
This is a long step forward, but
One in keeping with the town’s pro-
greeaiveneas and pnblio spirit. In
their efforts tor the higher and better
education of the ooming voter and
home-maker, the city fathers will re
ceive the hearty support of every cit
izen. Many cities have given too much
thought to a large census enumera
tion, and too little to the class of peo
ple which that enumeration repre
sented. The result has been far from
satisfactory from a moral standpoint.
Tifton’s motto has ever been, qual
ity first, quantity afterwards. The
rosnlt has been one of the model
towns of South Georgia. There is no
citiren more valuable than tbe boy
who ia raised and ed nested id tbe
in the town in which he ia called to
take a place in tbe business or pro
fessional world.
No money can be better or more
wisely spent than in the moral train
ing and education of the yonng.
Give the school teacher yonr hearty
rapport, for next to yon, the fntnre
welfare of your - child depends upon
him.

The post-office was moved Wednes
day to the southwest room in tbe
Bowen building, facing Dove avenue.
The arrangement is practically the
same as before, and Postmaster Doff
and his assistants are already becom
ing quite at home.
Tbo new location is not so conven
ient as the old one, which was the
most desirable place in town, but ia
tbe best that coaid be done after the
move became necessary.
J. It Cole A Co. are fitting up the
room jnst vacated, and will put a line
of groceries therein in a few days.

The sad and sudden death of Mr.
J. B. Haralson was a shook to hia
many friends. Ho was raised and
married in Ty Ty, bnt afterwards
moved to Tampa, whence he came
here some time ago. He was quite
yonng to be stricken with apoplexy.
Hia widow and little one* hare tbe
sympathy of the community in their
bereavement. Tbo body was tent to
Ty Ty for burial last even<ng.—
