SOME HORRORS OF REVOLUTION
Reading what Uttle the censor would let us
have of news from the Russian revolution, the
people of this country regarded it as a rather
tame, although effective affair ; a sort of Latin-
American burlesque. As a matter of facL it
appears to have been a period of rapine, not,
arson and murder. Mme. % Savinkova. mother
of the Russian War Minister, in a thrilling ar
ticle in defense of her son for restoring cap
ital punishment, gives us just a glimpse of what
must hive been awful days. Unconsciously she
gives it for she has an eve single to her son’s
defense, and writes as if she thought the world
knew. We quote:
"The great hopes of our country were shat
tered, when masses of human beings before our
eyes changed into wild beasts- I was horrified
at the story of how a wild horde in the streets
violated old and young, attacking the tiny bo
dies of dead children and pointing with mock-
ing laughter to dishonored and hysterical motn-
era. when with oneTdow they broke- the skulta
of those daring to protest, when they sent bul
lets not to- the enemy but to their own people,
who were sruck down behind; when, hissiiqr
and whistling, they raised on points of their
bayonets their commander who tried to stop
their disgraceful flight—then it was that I un
derstood how easy, after these hornble mur
ders, death by shooting seemed to be.
Much concerning recent events we will not
know for some time to come. But occasional
glimpses do not "give us u good opinion of the
Russian revolutionist. We would not be surprised

he ought-to have for an ordinary living. If
we must have Commissioners, we would pre
fer one to three, or three to a larger number.
So far as results are concerned, we believe bet
ter satisfaction is usually obtained through the
appointment plan than by popular election.
. We only mention our personal views as a
preface to the statement that we want the pres
ent law to stand until it has been given the test
of time. We also want the present board re
