London, Sept. 27.—Four powerful German counter-at
tacks last night failed to wrest from the British force* any of
the ground gained yesterday, according to the announcement
made by the War Office at noon today.
The Germans lost heavily and %fter several futile charges
the fighting slackened.
London, Sept. 26 The British advance in Belgiuin has

front to the northeast of Ypres 'this morning, making good
progress.
The War Offic* announced at noon that the attacks fol
lowed a tremendous bombardment of the German positions
from near Langemarche to the district soutl^ of the Ypres-
Roulers road.

are heavy.

It was announced that all but seven of the men wanted
