Our Christmas Gifts.
The subject Jof our present
tnought is tnc Christmas that is
just now passing and will soon
he no more except as we remem
ber it t as among the treasures
stored away in our minds, per
haps to be often recalled by' the
many little tokens ot love which
we hoki dear as “Christmas
Gifts.” Then let us talk togeth
er a little about the gifts that
came to us from loving friends
and kindred dear,—of course 1
cannot know of all the nice toys
and and treasures you received,
and you may not care to know
ot the things that came to
me, hut among the several that
came from friends I love is one
that I thiuk you will allow me
to mention and that is “my new
fountain Pen.” and as I take it
uo to ’ vr ' te m y first message the
thought C0iJ es to me > wel1 1 wil
write a litt'e seriuT' 1 01
to the little folk for
thing and I would that ever
word writt. n may be prompted | Qralini
by a motive as pure at> the little j
;goldj?eu that W1 ”- s }}
have nojother object in
writing hut to say something
that may be lor your good and
to the praise of our loving Sav.
lor who gave his life for us, and
iQitollX’lory of our Father in
'-<*ho so loved the world
that he gave ln§'•e~4.y beloved
son to die forus that we through
and by him might be saved
And hete we have given us the
true motive of all right giving,
that every real gift is prompted
by love, and is to be received as
a token of love from those who
bestow these gilts upon us.
Parents give toys and other
more useful and valuable giLs to
their children because they love
them, fiiends bestow gifts upon
friends because they love them,
this is natural, this is human and
is all right.
But there is a divine and holy
nature, if we shou’d so express
it, that prompts the bestowment
of gifts not upon friends only but
upon those who are not o r
friends, and such was and is the
love ot our Heavenly Father,
for He gave the greatest of all
gifts to the world when the world
was no lriend to him, ‘tor God
commendeth his love to vard
in that while we were yet sinners
Christ died for us.’
Then while it is good and
right for us to give to friends j
aod those who love us is it not
good also to give to those who
even hate us if we see that they
are really in need, lor in so doing
we look not for reward in this
life but our thoughts are turned
toward Heaven where we have
assurance that such unselfish
gift is a treasure la d up in Heav<

to proceed from New York to Par
is, via Bering strait and Siberia, a
total distance of some 10,000 miles,
lie turned the trick in 1,000 days.
In the matter of speed and en
durance combined, Jlicre may be
cited two instances of horseman
ship during the reigns of Henry
Till, of England and his daughter,
Elizabeth. Wolsey, then a royal
chaplain and afterward the great
cardinal, achieved a remarkable
feat in a journey to the Nether
lands, whither lie went to see Em
peror Maximilian. Leaving London
at 4 in the afternoon, Wolsey trav
eled by boat to Gravesend, rode
through the night to Dover and,
crossing to Calais, finished his jour
ney on horseback, reaching the em
peror that same evening. On the
following morning he posted hack
to Calais and had reached Rich
mond by sunset, accomplishing the
j journey to Holland and hack in
| something over two cloys.
The other instance referred to
was that on the occasion of the
i death of Queen Elizabeth. It was
j then'that Robert Cary hastily de-
j parted from London to carry the
1 news to the succeeding ruler, James
VI. of Scotland. Riding out of
Whitehall a little after 0 o’clock 011
a Thursday morning, Cary covered
155 miles, to Doncaster, that same
night. The next day he proceeded
! to liis home nt Witherington, where
I10 spent some" time disposing of
j important business, and did not
start for Edinburgh till the next
i morning. Had not an accident be-
i fallen him lie would have reached
I the Scottish city by midnight. As
J it was, lie achieved (lie entire jour
ney of -100 miles within three days.

The Germans are generally
reputed to he good riders, i->ut sev
eral years ago some ollicers of the
imperial army accomplished won
derful feats of horsemanship in
striving for pth.es offered by the
empera? for long distance riding.
Many officers tried to ride from
Berlin to Vienna, a distance of 425
miles. The winner wa3 Count
Staremherg, who completed the
long journey in seventy-one hours
and twenty minutes and was
awarded a prize of $5,000 as well
as a silver bust of the emperor.

A Spoiled Climax.
Actors and actresses sometimes
meet with strange interruptions in
their most thrilling scenes.
Richard Mansfieid used to tell
grimly of a performance of “A Pa
risian Romance.” He was at his
best, he would say, that night. He
carried the entire audience with
him. And when his great climax
came, when he lifted the last glass
of champagne to his lips and his
face twitched and his hand and arm
shook convulsively, splashing the
wine in all directions, there was a
profound silence, a thrilling horror,
in the house.
In this tense, breathless moment
us a man in the gallery was heard to
cry out in fierce indignation:
“Holy Moses! Who was that spit
in me eye?”
