WATCH BUYING ADVICf
Intelligent watch-buying requires judge
ment on your part in two things, the case
and the works.
These two items that constitute a watch are
obtained by the jeweler from two factories
that are unrelated. The works are fitted into
the cases by the jeweler and the price of the
completed watch depends on the cost of the two.
Thus, you can buy a very fine case con
taining a cheap movement and think you are
getting a bargain, or you may buy a cheap
case containing a fine movement and be de
ceived again.
It Is the proper combination of the two
that makes the watch of worth.

Few nitTiaiciis have possessed j
more caustic iongue than the lafs
King Leopold of Belgium when h«
chose to exercise it. Once a dispute
was raging in the Belgian army as
to whether the words of commartf
should be given in Flemish or
French. Neither side would give
in, and at length it was agreed that
King Leopold should decide the
matter. The aged monarch asked
for a week in winch to consider the
question. At the end of that period
ne summoned the leading generals
and announced that he had decided
that in future all orders should be
given in Esperanto. Needless to
■ay, the disputants managed to come
to Borne amicable arrangement.
Thoughtful Husband.
Parting is hard to bear, and the
young man who endeavors to soften
its pangs for his bride of a month
certainly deserves commendation.
“And now that our honeymoon
is over and we ure settled in our
own home must you leave me for
three whole days for the sake of
business, Henry?” asked the cling
ing wife in a tone of reproach.
“I must, dear Mabel,” said the
young husband. “But to make the
separation seem less abrupt I am
going on the accommodation train
instead of the express.”
Atbestus.
The mystery of the mineral king
dom is asbestus. It is, in fact, so
much of a puzzle that many scien
tists look upon it as a sort of link
between the mineral and the vege
table world. It might be said to
resemble a mineralogical vegetable,
possessing the curious properties
found in both, for it is at once
fibrous and crystalline, elastic and
brittle, heavy as a rock when taken
from the mines, but light as spun
silk when treated mechanically.
The Paramount Sacrifice.
Rarely does a week pass that
some one of the Northern period
icals does not carry a story re*
fleeting upon the South, and de
picting this section as people
with semi-barbarians.
It would s6em that the tribe of
long haired men and short haired
women were greatly troubled
about us, and determined to
bring us back to civilization, and
in the tervor of this enthusiasm
no sacrifice can be too great.
Witness the following from a
recent issue of Collier’s Weekly:
‘•There are already many
schools in the south for. these
peopie, and many northern
women are now at work helping
to raise funds to carry these
on and to found new ones. Mrs.
Martha Gfelow asked one hun
dred members ot the Colony
Club ot New York to give up
their Easter hats for the cause.”
The nobility and the real
greatness ot this sacrifice must
appeal to us all, for nothing is so
dear to the feminine heart as the
Easter top piece, and to givn up
this and ( w«ar the “peach basket’’
of last year instead of the “chan>
ticler” of 1910, is indeed a par
amount sacrifice. (
Maybe some day our friends
at the north will learn that the
south can attend to its own af>
tairs and to its own education.

Proved Blessing in Disguise
What was at first regarded as
nothing but a curse is now found
to have had some of the elements
of a blessing mixed up with it.
We reter tb the boll weevil,
whose ravages in the cotton fields
of Texas threatened ruin to large
sections of that state It now ap
pears that as a result of its visiti
ation the sections in which it
operated are today richer than
ever before. The boll weevil did
what all the preaching in the
world would never have accom.
plished. It revolutionized the
farming system of the country,
drove the farmers to a diversifi
cation ot their crops, and now
to their joy, and probably as well
to their surprise, they find them'
selves richer, vvith^their lands
yielding much greater profits,
and advancing more rapidly in
value than before the boll weevil
first invaded the fields.
It is frequently the case in life
that what seems a disaster be
yond calculation, with nothing
but evil in its aspect, turns out
in the end to have more of the
elements of a blessing in it than
ot a curse. The fact that in
Texas the boll weevil has not
left a ruined territory behind it
is very comforting now that the
insect is approaching closer to
Georgia and its advent in large
numbers is looked for within the
next three years. There is no
reason to believe that we can es<
cape it. Come it must, and come
it will. But with this lesson
we can await its approach with
fqr more equanimity than would
have been the case a few years
ago. Here is what Governor
Sanders, of Texas, has to say oi
the result ot its work in that
state.
“Before the irruption of the
Mexican past the Texas farmer
raised cotton almost exclusively,
and had to look to other sections
of the country for its food sup jly.
Brought by the weevil to the
necessity of growing hog and
hominy at home.” Gov. Sanders
says, “the result has been with a
season or two of diversified
farming the bank returns show
larger deposits than when cotton
was grown to the exclusion ot
food products, Truck farmers
who formerly were cotton plant-
eis, then thought times were
prosperous if an acre of land
yielded $75, whereas now
to $500 an acre is realized ”

.MALARIA
Malaria is due to impurities and poisons in the blood. Instead of being
rich, strong and healthy, the circulation has become infected with germs of
disease whicli destroy the rich, red corpuscles that furnish nourishment and
strength to the body, and reduced this vital fluid to such a weak, watery
condition that it is no longer able to keep the system in health, or ward off
the countless diseases and disorders that assail it. The loss of these
red corpuscles takes the color and glow of health from the cheek, and we
see pale, sallow faces and washed out, chalky complexions among the first
symptoms of Malaria. But Malaria is a general systemic disease, and as
tile hlood becomes more heavily loaded with its germs we have more serious
and complicated symptoms; the impure blood having its effect on all parts
of the body. The appetite fails, digestion is weakened, chills and slight
fever are frequent, and the sufferer loses energy and ambition because of a
consent tired-out and “no account ” feeling. The lack of necessary nour
ishment and healthful qualities in
the blood causes boils and abscesses.
skin affections, and in some cases
sores and ulcers to break out, and
sometimes the patient is prostrated
with a spell of malarial fever which
may leave his health permanently
impaired. To cure Malaria both a
blood purifier and tonic are necessary,
In order to remove the cause and at
the same time build up the system
from its weakened and run-down
condition. S. S. S. is the mediciue

During 1900 I was running a farm on
the Mississippi river and became so impreg
nated with Malaria that for a year I was
almost a physical wreck. I tried a number
of medicines recommended as blood purifi
ers, chill cures, and Malaria eradicators,
but nothing did me any good until I began
to use S. S. S. The result was that after
taking it for awhile I was as well and
strong as I evar was. I hart never had a
chill since nor the allghtest symptom of

greatest and safest of all tonics.
S. S. S. goes down into the circulation and removes every trace of impurity
or poison, and at the same time gives to the blood the health-sustaining qual
ities it needs. It cures Malaria thoroughly and permanently because it
removes the genus and poisons which produce the disease, and while doing
this tones up and strengthens every part of the system. When S. S. S. has
cleansed the blood the symptoms pass away, the healthy color returns to
the complex on, the old tired, depressed feeling is gone, and the entire health
