tall man, after waiting a moment,
raised his own foot and brought it

The Monument Dwindled.
Tho widow of a French deputy
came the day after the funeral to
consult a great sculptor on the sub
ject of a monument for her hus
band’s tomb. The sculptor sug
gested a portrait bust. “Only a
bust!” she cried indignantly. “I
wish at least a statue with allegor
ical figures.”
A week later, when the sculptor
had the model of the group well in
hand, came a note saying that she
had decided that the bust, after all,
would be in better taste. For some
weeks the artist worked on the
bust. At length the young widow
arrived on the arm of an attache
of legation. She opened her lor
gnette and inspected the bust. “It
is very like him,” she said finally,
“hut a bust is so commonplace. A
bronze medallion would be in far
better taste.”
The monument actually bears a
medallion in bronze under the niche
intended for the full Wgth statu!
of the deputy.
Princess Nila's Fan.
M. Jules Claretie tells a pretty
story about the first use of the fan
in France as an implement of co
quetry. In prehistoric days, he says,
when France was peopled by fire
worshipers, the king of what is now
Paris was the father of a princess of
great beauty, Princess Nila. It was
her duty to watch over the sacred
fire and coax it into flame with her
fan when it was dying down. Orie
day she had forgotten her fan and
blew upon the cinders of the fire.
It leaped up toward her and ever
afterward refused to brighten ex
cept when the princess blew upon
it. On the day when she discovered
this the princess used her fan to
hide her blushes, for she understood
the secret of the holy fire, which
had become enamored of her
charms.—London Express.

Deeply Injured.
Her eyes were wild; her hair was
in disorder; her face was flushed;
her hands were clinched. She was
a deeply injured and desperate wo
man.
“Oh,-cruel one,” she cried in an
guished tones, “1 have borne with
you too long! You have injured
the very foundations of my being.
Day by day you have tortured me,
and yet 1 could not bear to give
you up. When first we met, how
your ease and polish attracted me!
When you became my own, how my
friends envied me! But your un
derstanding is too small for my
large soul. You are opposed to my
advancing myself. You have ruin
ed my standing in society. If we
had never met I might have walked
in peace. So now begone! We part
forever.”
There was a moment’s convulsive
breathing, then a gritting of teeth
and a sharp sigh. It was all over.
By a supreme effort she had pulled
off her new shoe.
