It is now wheat harvest, and
by your permission l wish to
make some suggestions through
the columns of your paper to the
larmer that has a crop ot wheat
to care for, not that I feel a sui
perior judgement to any suc
cessful (armer: but as I have
been milling and handling grain
the greater part of my life. 1
think that I have learned some
ot the best ways to be success
ful in having good sound wheat.
Surely we all remember that
the last wheat crop was gotten
out during a rainy season and I
am sure that 50 per cent of the
entire crop was unfit for bread
aod all because it was threshed
out wet or green. In my first
milling days it was seldom that
I ever had to grind a musty crop
of wheat, for in those days the
wheat crops were not threshed
out till after the other crops
weie laid by and by that time
the wheat was perfectly dry. I
have seen grops of wheat left in
the fields at least two months, in
the small shocks the cap bundles
would be green with sprouted
wheat and after it was threshed
out it was much better, than one
half of the wheat that is ground
in these days. The main cause
tor having so much spoiled
wheat is, that there is but few
men that know when the wheat
is dry enough to keep, they just
have it threshed when the thresh
comes along and the men that
run the threshing machines al
ways commence too soon and
never stop for a rainy day, and
when they find a man that does
not want his crop threshed out
wet: they tell him they will not
come back to his crop so he lets
it be threshed out wet or dry
and nine times out of ten his
little crop of wheat rots on his
hands after he has sunned it all
that he can . I have never rais
ed many crops of wheat; but I
have watched very closely those
that do always have good sound
grain in wet years as well as dry
ones, and they tell me that they
let their wheat get so ripe that
the heads will turn down and as
is cut they have it well shocked
and capped with three (3) bund
les and let it stand tnat way
some lour weeks and if it rains
they let it remain till the rain

ANNOUNCEMENTS.
For State Treasurer.
To The People of Georgia:
The Hon. Pope Brown having declined to
become a candidate to succeed himself as
State Treasurer I hereby announce myself a
candidate for that office, subject to the ac
tion of the Democratic party at the next
primary for the selection of statehouse
officers.
My candidacy is based on my qualifica
tions to fill the office of state treasurer, as
demonstrated by long and faithful service
formerly in that capacity, from which office
I voluntarily retired several years ago on
account of ill health. My health having been
restored I would like to fill the ^office again
and to that end 'I £beg the support of the
people. Very respectfully,

To The People of Georgia.
“I hereby announce my candidacy for
the office of state treasurer, subject to the
democratic white primary of 1910, to be
held on a date to be selected by the state
democratic executive committee.
“In making this announcement I feel
that it is appropriate for me to say that my
service tor seven years in both branches of
of the Georgia legislature, during which
time many of the present laws relating to
banks and banking were enacted, and my
service at the same time on the house com
mittee on banks and banking, by which
these laws were considered, has given me a
clear insight into the Georgia laws concern
ing banking and finance,
“In addition to the foregoing experience
I have been, for fifteen yesrs, president of
the Elberton Loan and Savings Bank, in
which capacity I may say I have gained
wide practical experience 'concerning the
operation of these laws; and as a result of
which I am in a position to recommend
certain improvements in the present laws
which will better safeguard the interests of
the depositiors in Geargia’s state banks.
■‘If elected to this important position, I
shall give my every effort to the faithful
discharge of its duties, to assist me in which
I shall secure the services of trained, expert,
and capable assistants.
“I respectfully request the favorable
consideration of the democratic voters of
the state. "Peyton M Hawes,

Scared Into Sound Health.
Mr B F Kelley, Springfield,
“A year ago j began to be troubled
with my kidneys and bladder, which
grew worse untill I became alarmed,
at my condition. I suffered also with
dull headaches and the action of my
bladder was annoying and painful.
I read of Foley Kidney Pills and
mashes it will not keep pure and
sound and ii you will have your
wheat threshed out dry it will
not need any lime, camphor gum
or anything oi that kind to keep
worms, bugs, and insects from
destroying it. The best way
that I have found to keep wheat
is have plenty oi sacks and as it
is threshed out to put one bushel
to each sack so that it can be
moved about to let get lresh air
and to keep rats lrom cutting
the sacks it is better this way
than to spread on a floor or to
box it up and I wish to say
again that I have iound many
crops oi good wheat that was
spoiled and unfit for bread and
it was made so by hauling up
befoie it was well dryed out and
put in to a large shock the straw
was green and damp and it
went through a heat and oi
course the grain was all musty.
It should be thrown up loosely
under a shelter if it must be
moved belore the thresh can be
had and in this way the air can
pass through it aad keep it cool;
but if it rains after you have cut
your wheat do not get uneasy.
Just keep the caps straight and
when the weather gets dry and
your wheat is threshed out you
will see that your wheat will be
nice ard good.
Yours lor pure bread,
Geo W Morris, The Miller,
