The Open Season For Flies.
The open season lor flies is
now on, and physicians and bac
teriologists are sending out pleas
to housewives all over the civ
ilized globe to sluy and slay.
The sport in this case is not
so much the thing ; truth to tell,
the deliberate killing ol flies is
what the small boy once describ
ed the “dinky work.’’ But the
- .scientists explain with all the
convincing (orce ol geometrical
piogression, that every lone and
solitary specimen ol the common
house fly that is allowed to run
wild now will, barring accidents
be responsible for more than a
million and a hall ol its tribe
belore the end of June.
Probably only the bald headed
will be willing to take these
figures literally, but there re
mains the grand and solemn fact
that il you wait until August to
kill a fly you will have the blood
ol only one miserable insect on
your hands ; but il you slay one
in April, thus preventing it Irom
breeding, you get a regular
Bwana Tumbo of a Jiiag, which
only the most absurd modesty
need lorbid you from [reckoning
potentially in hundreds ol thou--
sands.
Considering the intection ca»*.
rying habits ol the lamiliai pest
the scientists are anxious that
the public at large should under*
stand the genesis ol flies and set
about the task of their suppres>
sion through the summer months
in an intelligent wav .
House flies survive the winter
in the person ol stutdy female
individuals, who hibernate from
October to April in the most se
cluded corner they can find. As
soon as the warm weather comes
they creep out and proceed to
lay their eggs, an average “seti
ting’’being about 120. These
eggs take about three weeks to
develop into the perlect adult
insect, and a simple little sum in
arithmetic shows that, giving
one ambitious female fly a lair
start this morning, she may hope
lor a progeny ot 1,728,000 in a
month’s time. Ol course, the fly
in this instance counts on every
egg in every setting surviving
the struggle lor existence: but
even making allowance lor ac
cidents. it is easy to see what
trouble the man who spares the
fly that hovers over his break-
last table this morning is laying
up for himself trouble two or
three years hence.
Health experts lay directly on
the flies the responsibility lor
the spread otdiptheria, coDsump
tion and enteric fevers. How
many young children have died
as a result ol drinking fly in
fected milk is something no one
can estimate with accuracy. A
recent experiment has shown
that a bowl of milk exposed to
flies (or 24 hours contained 700,
000 bacteria per cubic centime
ter, as against less than a tenth
ol that number where the milk
was reasonably protected. Ex
amined under a microscope one

body 1,222,760 different bacteria

two or three other flies water

Per Loring Brown, Mgr.
To The People of Georgia.
“I hereby announce my candidacy for
the office of state treasurer, subject to the
democratic white primary of 1910, to be
held on a date to be selected by the state
democratic executive committee.
“In making this announcement I feel
that it is appropriate for me to say that my
service tor seven years in both branches of
of the Georgia legislature, during which
time many of the present laws relating to
banks and banking were enacted, and my
service at the same lime on the house com
mittee on banks and banking, by which
these laws were considered, has given me a
clear insight into the Georgia laws concern
ing banking and finance.
“In addition to the foregoing experience
I have been, for fifteen yesrs, president of
the Elberton Loan and Savings Bank, in
which capacity I may say I have gained
wide practical experience concerning the
operation of these laws; and as a result of
which I am in a position to recommend
certain improvements in the present laws
which will better safeguard the interests of
the depositiors in Geargia's state banks.
“If elected to this important position, I
shall give my every effort to the faithful
discharge of its duties, to assist me in which
I shall secure the services of trained, expert,
and capable assistants.
"I respectfully request the favorable
consideration of the democratic voters of
the state. “Peyton M Hawes,
