Roopville.
School opened here Monday under
very flattering prospects. We had
with us Rev W. W. Roop who led
devotional services, also made a
fine talk to patrons and pupils; then
Prof. Ahnon came forward and
gave us a splendid speech followed
by J J. Thomasson of Carrollton
and Hon. W, J. Millican, Ordinary
of Carroll County, who both made
good speeches and was enjoyed
very much, also your scribe and C.
M. Garrett and Prof. L. A. Ware
made short talks. There were 51
present and almost as many patrons
which was a good opening consider
ing the busy season. We congratu
late ourselves in again securing the
services of Prof. Roy Almon, and
his sister, an able assistant Miss
Ruth, they can’t be excelled.
The Carrollton Association held
here last week was a splendid ses
sion. We didn’t have many visitors
present and all seemed to be about
their Father’s business.
Our merchants are doing a rush
ing business at present,
Mrs. Harry Sheats, of Carrollton
visited her parents, Dr. and Mrs.
Brock of this place Monday.
Mr. G. W. Bell, of Columbia, S. C.,
is visiting friends and relatives
here.
Mr. S. C. Barr, our efficient car
penter is kept busy here all the
time.
We need several houses here,
who will be the first to build?
We regret very much to part with
the estimable family of Eunie Mar
tin who recently sold out here and
moved to the home of Mr. John
Stipes: but we welcome the family
of Mr. Loftin who purchased the
home of Mr. Martin and is now in i
possession.
Cotton is short'in this section,
baing nearly all pickod out.

The said Fair has been a grand

Ample Apology
There is in Congress a Western
Representative of Celtic origin, who
has more than once "stirred up the
animals” by his propensity to bait
the opposition.
On one occasion he rose to de
nounce the statements made in f
speech that had been delivered by
a member of the other party. His
impetuosity led him to phrase liis
remarks rather strongly.
“Order, order]” exclaimed the
speaker, pounding with his gavel.
Again in a minuite or two, did the
son of Erin return to his charge of
wilful misstatement. Again he
called to “order.”
It was a critical moment. His
colleagues, for motives of policy did
not wish him to be put out of the
debate , so they hinted so by tug
ging vigorously at his coat-tails.
Now, it is a very dangerous mat
ter to trifle with the tails of an irish
man’s coat, save in the cause of
friendship. Nevertheless, the in
dignant yet good-humored member
recognized the command of his par
ty,and sat down after delivering this
Parthian dart.
“I obey the ruling of the House,
and I beg to retract what I was
about to observe!”
That one touch of Irish oratory
took the whole house by storm-
Editor Mercer, of the Fitzgerald I November Lippincott’s
Enterprise, gives his lady friends
the following fatherly advice: "Put
forty-two behind you and a nice bib
apron in front of you and learn the
grandest of all arts, that of prepar
ing human food. It beats the art of
dressing and the art of entertaining.
“Ladies, learn to cook.”

Not As It Should Be
Well our second fair is over and
a thing of the past, and it is to be
regretted that so many are dissatis
fied, and so much complaint made.
I have heard of no dissatisfaction
thus far of the awards, and the
premiums given, but people sure do
give some of the management
Hail Columbia.
One man said he thought it very
wrong for the promoters to have
allowed that abominable collection
of shows, graft and swindling com
bination to be there duping the
people of their money. Others claim
that after they had rented stalls for
their stock and paid the rent in
advance, for the managers to have
rerented to other people and thus
cut them out of a place to exhibit
their stock. Others claim that the
csnduct was so tolerated there that
it was disgraceful, and one lady said
that she and another lady went
around to see the horses, and that
two men were in or near the stall
with their money in their hands
making a bet on a horse race and
that their presence did not deter
their excited remarks at all so forth
and so on, thus it goes. That there
were some extraordinary exhibits is
the comment of everyone, and I did
so lament »he fact that my friend
Zed Mathews was so ill that he
could not be there, though he dis
played a fine exhibit.
Now good people remember that
this was our second experience, and
the managers had not learned all
the mistakes liable to occur at such
places, although they cured many
of last year. Dont get any dander
up yet, and lets all go to work for a
third fair for 1911. Carroll is fast
forging to the front in everything,
done there in many. Hurrah for
old CarrolL Yours truly.

Failing to Pay Dog Tax
Will Disfranchise You
Do you own a dog?
If you do you had better hike to
the tax collector’s office and pay
the tax on him, else you are likely
to be disfranchised.
The Attorney-General has ruled
that a failure to pay the dog tax
makes one a defaulter and illegible
of becoming an elector in the state
and county, although the dog on
which the tax is assessed be sur
rendered to the proper office and
killed.
The Comptroller also says that
the tax collector has no right to
split the receipt, that is, accept part
of the tax and not on the dog, but
he must refuse all the tax if that
part,is not paid.
