Washington, D. C. Dec. .14—Joseph
Meriwether Terrell was sworn in on
Jw 1% #1 a\ \# ^ Tuesday December Gth. as a senator
m ^3 ■ T ^ of the United States from the state
of Georgia to succeed the late Sena-
^ tor Clay.
He was immediately assigned to
to the important committee on post-
i office and post roads, a position held
by Senator Clay and in which he
did most effective work. The com
mittee considers all matters affect
ing the postal service including the
free delivery service and passes up
on the appropriation bill exceeding
$250,000,000 for carrying of the post-
office department. Mr. Terrell also
landed on the committees on man
ufacturers, coast defenses, coast and
insular surveys, and University of
the United States, all of which were
held by Senator Clay. The only one
of Senator Clay’s committees h e
failed to secure, was that on appro
priations and this went' to a senator
who has been in Washington a num
ber of years.
“I am greatly pleased that I se
cured the post office committee, for
We are glad to announce to the public that we have in this place I believe I can be of
obtained the services of Mr W. F. Dunlap, of Tallapoosa, f^L^ny choic^oVaT^hLeTpen
who will have charce of our Plumbing Department hereafter, to me, and I csnsider myself most
fortunate in securing it. - ”
The post is a coveted one, and a
number of democratic senators who
have been in office longer than Sen
ator Terrell would have been glad
to have it but Senator Bacon, who
is is a member of the steering com
mittee of democrats, made a hard
fight tor this good berth for his col
league and was successful.
Should the house bejdernocratic two
years hence, and a democratic presi
dent sit in the White House, the
pest will be one of great importance
affecting the whole state, and Sena
tor Terrell will have a large part in
Bhapingjthe personnel of Uncle Sam’s
big force of post office employees in
Georgia.
