Hoke Smith is the new United
States senator from Georgia succeed
ing the late Alexander S. Clay in
that high office.
The general assembly of Georgia
elected him Wednefday, the rest it
of the joint ballot by both houses
being announced by President Slaton
at 12: o'clock.
Mr. Covington’s name was not
placed in nomination. Neither was
that of Mr. Holder. They received
complimentary votes.
The total vote cast was 220. One
hundred and eleven would have
elected Mr. Smith. He therefore
received 44 more votes than he need
ed for election.
The rolls of the two houses were
called separately, that of the senate
first. Mr. Smith gained two votes in
the senate. He gained 25 in the
house. He needed none of them.
He had 128 votes in the separate
ballots Tuesday, which were 17 more
than he needed in Wednesday’s vote
He was elected before the balloting
began, as a matter of fact. The bal
lot was the formal official confirma
tion of what everybody knew.
The two houses met in joint ses
sion in the hall of representatives.
Pres. John M. Slaton, of the senate,
called the session to order and pre
sided over it.
The Journals of both honses of
Tuesdays session were read, Pres,
thereupon made the formal declare
tion that no one candidate had re
ceived a majority of the votes cast
in each house. No candidate was
elected. The general assembly
would precede with another ballot
in joint session. Nominations were
in order.
Representative George Westmore
land, of Fulton county, placed in
nomination the name of Hoke Smith.
Representative Hardeman, of Jef-
erson, started to second the motion
but was ruled out of order by the
President, who declaredthat seconds
would not be heardin the joint ses
sions.
Senator Graham of the 7th. nom
inated Joseph M. Terrell.
Representative Elder of Oconee,
nominated Thomas E. Watson.
Senator Shaw of the 11th with
drew the name of W. A. Covington
from further participation in the
contest. Despite the withdrawal
Mr. Covingtons name was voted,
Mr. Shaw cast his own ballot for

Vaudette Theater
Open |
. The Vaudette Theatre, the newi
electric theatre recently opened by 1
Lynch &. Cefalu in our city in the
building formerly occupied by Gold
stein Bros., fills a long felt want. 1
The house has been thoroughly
renovated, the six or eight electric
fans keep one cool, the seats are
modern opera chairs nice and com
fortable and the seating capacity is
about three hundred and fifty, the
pictures are all new and up-to-date,
the music furnished by the orches
tra is grand, and the manager, Mr.
Peter R. Cefalu, is one of the clev
erest men you ever met.
When inter, iewed by a Free
Press man Mr. Cefalu expressed
himself as being highly pleased with
Carrollton and her people, and the
generous patronage they have given
the Theatre, and stated that they
were ready to put on any amuse
ments the people called for, as it
was their intention to run a clean
and up-to-date amusement house.
The doors are opened at 3 and 7
p. m., and if you want to see any of
your friends you will find them
there. Go out to-night and see for
yourself, and, by-the-way, let the
children go this afternoon, they will
enjoy it.
